STL based Aja LaStarr is working on an anthology called, "The No Vacancy Project" about homelessness. She is looking for poems, short stories, essays, blogs, articles, artwork, photographs, etc. that speaks to the condition of homelessness… If you or anyone you know is interested in contributing you can send submissions to:ajalastarr@yahoo.com. She will be donating the proceeds from the anthology to a local homeless shelter in St. Louis, Missouri.

This week we feature two movers and shakers in the St Louis area who were dressed in black.. First is photographer Erica Brooks of Business Plus ++. She recently had a glam photo shoot with photographer Cedric Scott and here was one of the shots of her in a  motorcycle chic style ensem with a 70s style hat. Brooks, who is an East St Louis native and  Mizzou grad is one of the hardest working female photographers in the St Louis area.  The other is tattoo artist Walter Deuce. The Southeast Missouri State alum is seen sporting a dapper suit with Kangol and shades while getting his club pic on in a retro pic from late 2011 giving a mix of urban formal style . Before he became a private tattooist he was an event promoter in St Louis with former biz partner Ezekiel Obasi.

BLIND PICZ

Who was the lady watching from the stage at a recent event at Lights On Broadway?

BLIND DISHZ

What popular national talk show host made a surprise visit to St Louis recently to check out a few hot spots? The talk show host is a male who has a popular talk show that airs nightly. He also hosts various award shows occasionally as well as emceed at the White House for one of President Obama’s galas. His first name is also the same as a former President as well. Who is he?

WORDZ

TO

THE
Z

This week we asked St Louisan Raqelle D. Wallace, who does frank critiques of award shows on Facebook, to give us her WHYz on the recent Soul Train Music Awards that aired last Sunday. Here’s what she had to ask:

Why was Centric Executive Vice President and General Manager, Paxton Baker, on the Soul Train Red Carpet in an outrageously tacky pink & green sequined jacket? Why were there no original Soul Train dancers asked to dance during the Soul Train line? Why was Tank messing with Bobby Womack’s hit, “If You Think You’re Lonely Now”?            Why were some performances cut off and sent to commercials?.Why did 2Chainz performance mess up a perfectly good flow?    Why does Miguel remind me of a new age Prince? Why did New Edition not perform right after receiving their Lifetime Achievement Award? Why did Uncle Charlie Wilson perform with almost every artist asked to perform? Why does Keyshia Cole’s performances always start off solid and then fizzle out because she’s out of breath? And, Soul Train’s Dick Griffey formed the group, Shalamar, so…..why couldn’t we get a surprise reunion with the original members?

OTHER WHYZ .from YOURS TRULY.... Why did Two and a Half Men star Angus Jones denounce his own show then later apologized? Why did Halle Berry's baby daddy think it was smart to retaliate and beat up  her fiance over her and his custody battle? Why are these men coming out now about having relations with puppeteer Kevin Clash years after it happened? Why is Nikki Minaj calling Steven Tyler a racist on Twitter? Why does Britney Spears only have one sentence responses during her critiques on X Factor? And Why are the Republicans giving Susan Rice a hard time to be appointed as the new Secretary of State?

Clear Channel radio personality and poet Selena J is the quintessential woman of the 21st Century. Not only is she beautiful she is smart, intelligent and focuses more on her spiritual  beauty and development than her "outsideness."

Selena J (J is for Johnson) has been a popular radio personality for KMJM Majic 104.9 (now Majic 100.3) in St Louis since 2001. There, she has been one of the popular hosts during the afternoon beat after the Steve Harvey Morning Show. During the early years of her tenure with the station she hosted a popular Saturday nite spoke word program called Souternative, the first and only neo-soul and

spoken word show in St. Louis, and   “Rhythm & Life” a

show playing positive and uplifting  music and  the Quiet

Storm segment before Keith Seat's syndicated show was

brought on board as the replacement.

Outside of radio, she is a popular spoken word artist, event

host and has developed her own holistic life seminars where

she speaks of spirituality and healthy living.

This week we spotted the hosts of the 6th Annual Hot List Awards who were fashion forward at the event. First, Hot List Award winning poet Lightning wore an elegant black party dress that complimented her curves with killer laced heels to match. Her cornrolled bun also was on point along with her long silver earrings. Her co-host Mszphyt was sporting a collegiate look with a blue blazer, white shirt, blue bowtie, rust brown pants and kicks with nerd glasses to match.

WORDZ

TO

THE

WHYZ

Why did the majority of the award show feel like a Nickelodeon Kids Award show? Why werent  the Pop and R&B Female categories not aired? Why did Jenny McCarthy molest Justin Bieber when he was accepting his award? Why werent there  many flashbacks to classic moments from the show to commemorate the 40th Anniversary? Why was Usher fumbling and babbling during his acceptance speech? And why were the accountants brought to the stage to be acknowledged?

OTHER WHYS: Why does it seem as though the conflict in the Gaza Strip seemed planned after the re-election of Obama? Why did the

first and now second guy wait til now to out the guy who does the voice of Elmo  as a gay pedophile? And why are folk focusing more on the ending of  Twinkies  than the loss of folks' jobs?

The Humanitarian Award went to the North County Falcons.

NOTE: This event was a very, shall we say, interesting. Now mind you, the event went smoothly and no bumps in the flow of it, but it was close to four hours which was a bit winding. With three shows in one (a fashion show, an award show and concert), it was a given that the show was going to be quite lengthy.  As far as the winners (which were chosen by online poll) well, the big winner was its event producer Jon Erickque who won three awards (Hottest Designer, Male Host and Grinder). And , well in his words on stage during one of his wins: "I work hard." (One moment in the show, he sent a rep from backstage to accept his award because he was too pooped to get the trophy!).

The highlights were the performances by Ls Up and Cynceer who were very energetic and got the crowd hyped into their sets. The fashions showcased were diverse from urban gear to elegant attire and as far as the award winners, although there were some head scratchers (Three winners for Male Grinder and the popular soul food spot Sweetie Pies losing Best restaurant to  JR Cricket?) but whatever it had taken for the STL community to attend, so be it. Oh, and YOURS TRULY did not win Best Blog.  All the nominees were given certificates of merit which was a nice touch. Other winners were Aloha for Female Singer; Jessie Taylor for Male Comedian and Inbox for Publication of the Year.
