East
St Louis native Jr DOT is on the move. Since
2011, he has been seen on a national stage as the hilarious sidekick to Sweetie
Pies co-owner Tim Norman in the hit reality show, :Welcome to Sweetie Pies”
that can be seen on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN.
But this 24 year old reality show star
is more than a second banana. He is also a singer, songwriter and a budding
record label president. OUTSTAGN had a chance to interview Jr DOT recently to talk
about his achievements.
OS:How did you
get on the show Welcome To Sweetie Pies?
JR: My best
friend in life (Tim Norman) just happens to be the son of the owner of Sweetie
Pies (Robbie Montgomery) as well as the creator of the show.
OS:How is it
filming the show? What’s the process like?
JR: Filming
the show is an unpredictable easy and fun process. For the most part I’m doing
what I always do which is crack jokes and have fun. The only difference is
there is a camera watching me do it. It is way easier than acting because when
I’m acting I have lines I have to remember as well as playing a character
that’s probably totally different from who I am. Filming the show, I’m just
being me and its being captured and showed to the world with the producer’s
perspective.
OS:.You were
on the third season opener as a agent provocateur to spy on the goings on of
the new Upper Crust restaurant. How many
episodes are you in this season?
JR:I guess
you’ll have to watch the show to find that out. Lol No seriously I don’t know
what they cut and what they keep.
OS:How was it
meeting Oprah?
JR: Imagine a
human earth quake walking into a room. RIGHT……. Unbelievable experience. I was
shocked at how down to earth she was. Security was thick but I was able to get
close enough to have to a real funny conversation with Oprah and Gail. I was
speechless and knew at the moment, being in her presence, I was part of a good
thing that would propel me to where I wanted to be. I was shocked she knew my
name. lol
OS:Did the
show change your life as far as people noticing you more?
JR: Well in St. Louis for the most part a lot of people know
me. As far as people not from St. Louis, I have yet to go anywhere and someone didn’t
yell out “Hey you are that guy J.R. from Sweetie Pies?”. I was shocked even
people from out of the country even know who I am.
Jr Dot on an episode of "Welcome to Sweetie Pies" with co-star and best friend, Tim Norman.
OS:When did
you begin your journey as an artist?
JR:I began
singing as a child. I was found out I was good at age 8. I started writing
songs at the age of 9. I started recording at age 13. When I was 16 I realized
this is what I want to do the rest of my life and I started taking it seriously
and went to college on a theater scholarship. The next thing I knew God was
opening doors for me.
OS:.What have been
some of the things you’ve done as an artist?
JR: I was a
finalist on MTV’s “Making the Band 4” as well a finalist on Fox 2’s “St. Louis
Idol” I was the lead character “Nomax” in the Black Repertory Theater’s
production of “Five Guys Named Moe” which won two Kevin Klein Awards. I have
also opened up for major hip hop artists like T.I., Gucci Mane, Jim Jones, Lil
Boosie, and Jim Jones. I was also a part of a nationwide college tour sponsored
by Nelly in which I opened for Murphy Lee. I have recorded countless amounts of
music that will be coming soon.
OS:.Explain this Shuck Puh (spit sound) that you have
created?
JR: (That’s) Haquak
Tu’ Spittin’ is the art of writing music for the positive mind so that the mind
and spirit become one and has a positive influence on society. I believe that
music is the most influential thing in life, especially to the youth in America. The way to reach the children is
through music and Haquak Tu’ Spittin’ will change the world. Haquak Tu’
Spittin’= TRUTH.
OS:What does
the Jr DOT mean?
JR: I was born
a Jr. instead of people me calling Jr, they call me J.R. DOT (and don’t forget
the DOT).
OS:You are the
son of former East St Louis Mayor Debra Powell. How was it like growing up with
a mother who was running the city?
JR: Let me
just say first that she made history becoming the first and only female Mayor
our great city has ever had. At the time
I hated growing up with my mother being the Mayor of the city. I wasn’t ever
able to just be a kid. I would get in trouble for doing things other kids did
all the time. I just wanted to be regular.
As I grew
older I was glad I had the experience. I know first-hand how politics works. I
had the opportunity to meet some legendary people like President Bill Clinton,
Louis Farrakhan, Harry Belafonte and Danny Glover to name a few. There are so
many things I learned from that experience I wouldn’t change it for the world.
OS:What is
your opinion about the entertainment scene here in the St Louis area?
JR: I think
the people of St. Louis need to take control of this city, come together and
propel each other to success. There needs to be more focus on loving each other
as artist like Atlanta artists have done for quite some time now.
OS:What would
people be surprised to know about you?
JR: I love
sports. I actually have dreams to become a sports analyst one day.
OS:.Whats next
up for you?
JR:Look out
for my Independent Record Label “Star Power Ent.” In which I am president and
partner with CEO and music extraordinaire Jesse “Godfatha” Jones. We have a
gang of new music that we will be releasing when the time is right. Let’s just
say its #International
OS: How can
someone contact for appearances or booking?
