Well, we have made it to the milestone of my blog OUTTOWN/OUTSTAGN!
In those ten years, the blog has gone through its incarnations from being a journal style entry
(maatspear.blogspot, com July 2005-June 2009), to hard news with pics (outtown.blogspot, com November 2006-May-2007, to more entertainment driven (June 2009-July 2012) and moving to a new site to focus on more fashion show events (outstagin.blogspot.com) July 2012-present.
As far as events, the blog has covered STL events from nightclub parties, concerts, live theater reviews, and fashion shows and news updates from people and celebs from, living or raised in the STL area.
The various segments that have been done include ARTIST SPOTLIGHT to WHO GOT STYLE, EVENT BITZ to STL-ICIOUS and the more consistent segment WORD TO THE WHYZ asking questions of different news events beyond St, Louis.
The blog also has spun off to various mediums from OUTTOWN VIDS to OUTTOWN RADIO.
How many blog entries? In a weekly time frame of 10 years there has been well over 2,000.
Who knew a journal entry idea 10 years ago after six years of doing print journalism (1999-2005)would lead to one of the seminal blog sites in the STL area that thousands have read across the globe.
How many more years can it run? As with life, who knows, but one thing is for sure, the blog has made its mark in the social mediasphere.
Below are 10 blog posts in its likeness when posted marking each year that the blog has been running every July since 2005.

the haps around town
Hello people. Welcome to my blogger. From this day on, I will scribe my thoughts on the latest gossip and events I attend and maybe get ya'll to respond and get your feedback. I am a vet at special events in the STL area and beyond and I hope to continue this on until I no longer have breath in my body.
OK.
First off. I attended recently the Jazz Festival in Shaw Park last month and I must say I really enjoyed it. My fave was Peabo Bryson (still looks good after all these years in the biz), Everette Harp and Normon Brown (He is very energetic with that guitar). Brenda Russell unfortunately was not able to attend due to a minor operation. Hope you get better. The guys did a tribute to her by singing her penned gem, "Get Here" (that was covered by Oleta Adams). Peabo stole the show by walking out in to the audience of of women who wanted to wipe the sweat off his brow. I was waiting for him to take off that suit coat and show off his chesteses. LOL. Anyway, I saw many local celebs there like Portfolio Gallery's Robert Powell, Black Rep's Karla Goldstein, and CBS TV guy Russ Mitchell in the VIP tent. The following day, Roy Hargrove and RH Factor performedly. I mostly stayed in the well air conditioned tent gettin my grub on with my friends Sonja Sheriff and Kameron. But from what I heard they were OK. They had one sista named Renee who was the def eye candy for the show. The attendance was kind of low for this one, but it seemed as though people had a good time while they were there.
Next off was the Woodie Awards at the Balck Rep. Intimate Apparel cleaned house swiping most of the major cateogories: Best Play, Best Actress (Linda Kenndedy, of course), Best Suppoting Actress and Best Director, Ron Himes. The celbs that were there were Ken Page, Glynn Turman (Still lookin good), Antonio "Huggy Bear" Fargas and Phyliss Yvonne Stickney. The festivities were nice, but the auction during the ceremony was kind of tacky, but I digress. The post party was very shi-shi with salmon and noodles and drinks flowing to the fullest. I had everyone talking with a balck sarong and pants outfit I had on. You had to have been there to see it.
Last July 4 weekend, I attended Steve Lacy's B Day Party at Seven. It was nice. Packed as always. No big celeb attended like Mike Jordon did awhile back at Seven for the Rams Party, but it was still nice. I'm glad I attended that and not Nelly's Black and White Party at Plush that was going on at the same time. I heard that Nelly did not show up and there was many fights that erupted there. What is really going people? Can't we all get along?
Last Monday I attended Darius Bradfords Comedy Jam at Plaush. It was $3 to get in with a special ticket that people got from Steve Lacy's Party. Now I now it was the end of teh holidays, but can we still be on time for stuff? The show was suppose to start at 9:30 p.m. Well I thought at least it would begin at 10. NOT. It started close to 11 pm. Now this was too TRIFLIN. They say it was the mike problem. But DJ Needles, for some reason did not have a problem with his amps on the 1s and 2s. Anyway, Darius asked the bar to give away $3 shots for an hour to make up the time. The comedians were OK. The first was Deandre. He needed to go back and learn how to deliver his stand up. My lil neph can get up there and do better. Then there was a sista who performed. Her name slips me. But she was actually good. She had a joke about her baby daddy kids stealing this mans CDs in his car and she said, "Boy, put all those CDs back in his truck. You can have two, but give the rest back. That was funny. Then it was Mr Whitfield. A comedy legend. He is TOE UP to the floor up. He reminds me of Redd Foxx. He is a blue comedy comdian. The joke with the mike hitting the top of women's heads simulated a DYCK was too hilarious. Darius, who was recently seen on P Diddy's Bad Boy of Comedy, had the laughs going as the host. He even brought up this sista from the audience who sang the hook to Nellys "Tipdrill". Bruh man had her in a headlock and demanded that she sing her verse so the crowd will know it is her. She refused and he continued to put her in a headlock. It was too classic.
Anyway, the show was good. It just needs to start on TIME. People like myself gotta hear the birds chirping the next morning.
Next week, Ill guive you my dibs on the Destinys Child concert and post party. And my skinny on the sneak preview of 1204, formerly Club Isis. An upcoming party is Joe Torry Basketball Game After Party at Seven July 16. It should be nice. I hear Soul Food's Rockmond Dunbar and Diffrent World's Dawnn Lewis are suppose to come through this year. I hope all the celebs show that say they are attending. We'll see.
FUTURE BLIND DISH: I just got word that in the next few weeks, some prominent big shots will get exposed about their hiring practices of AFRICAN AMERICANS. This has the potential to rock the world of St. Louis. Hmmmm. Be on the look out for that.
Until next time--see ya outside!

The hip-hop room aka the Egyptic room
This was the men's bathroom with a fireplace!
EVENT-VIEWZ. On Saturday, I checked out Free Time's event Uptown Saturday Night at this spot called savor located on Lindell and Boyle. Savor is what you call a neighborhood restaurant housed in an elaborately renovated historic mansion (I can just imagine how much a glass of water is in this spot!) .
The spot designed with a contemporary flourish (white table-clothed restaurant, bar and intimate theatre , regal rooms, and and outdoor garden patio)
This was my first time here and I must say I have never known this spot to be there (even when I was working at the St. Louis American for three years which is a few doors down from it) I was very impressed with the locale and atmosphere. Very chic and classy. Their comepetion was at the Loft (which was also free before 10) but I definitely wanted to check out Savor, a newer spot and where I havent been before.
Just when you enter (Oh the event was free til 10:30 BTW) there is the bar area with a plasma screen (that was showing STLONFIRE and STLONLINE pics on STL socialtes, toward the right was the resturant area and dining and waitng area (Wished it would have been at least some appetizers there while people sat and schmoozed). Upstairs were the restrooms (The men's bathroom lookD like a den with a fireplace), and about two more big regal rooms up therre.
HIGHLIGHHTS:
*A Party Man with dreads danced all nite (lierallY) as he was the focus of attention dancin on the ceiling in the hip-hop room wheer DJ Needles spun on the 1s and 2s and a couple fo hundred tried to squeeze in the 100 sq ft room!
*There was this one sista who kept asking me why wont I smile throuighout the nite . It was gettin on my nerves, but I played it off and smiled at her. If that wa sher way of flirtin, I didnt get it.
* I had an interseting convo with educator and actress Camille Morgan (aka the Grayhaired Bombshell) about my name Ma'at and how local critics didnt like the play "Johnnie Taylor Comes Home" that she acted in last year at the Midlred Bastion Theatre and her boustier. LOL
*Just as it was closing time (around 1sh) one of the owners of Savor walked in the doorway where I was standing and said that it was time for the party to shut down. I guess he thought I was one of the bouncers cause of the black cap I had on I guess, but it throughme for a loop.
All in all, it was great atmosphere, schmoozing (and hookin up, too) and dancing. FREE TIME said that they were goign to use the spot again for their anniversary in October. Good choice!

OUT 440--LIVE (OFF) THE LEVEE--ANTHONY HAMILTON CONCERT at SOLDIERS MEMORIAL PARK July 5
Around 5 ish PM, folk were waitin to get in the Park for the concert. They let the folk start comin in around 5:30 p.m. Meanwhile, they were some characters around the APrk awitin to get in. One who took the HOOD RAT AWARD was the brotha who had on two sets of rings on each finger and watches on both arms!
This white guy from NYC was pimpin the Obama shirts to the crowd as they wait to get in. We told the guy we were John McCain suppoerts as a joke. LOL. BELOW: More folk waiting to get inside.
This sista was working overtime selling beer to the VIP crowd (Oh and we will address this matter later in this posting.) .
The opening
act was Jefferson City's Gloria Brand whose hour set comprised of many R&B faves including the opening song, Aretha Franklin's "Spirit in the Dark."
She also performed, Rufus' "Tell Me Somthing Good," Donny Hathaway's "Ghetto Boy," and Deneice Wiliams' "Free."
She also jazzed it up with Ella Fitzgerald's "Round Midnight," Bobby Caldwell's, "What You Won't Do For Love." and some of her won scatting that wowed the crowd.
Charmaine Chapman Co-Chairman Debra Patterson addressed the crowd on the sponsors and the afterparty at Skybox as Enterprise Car's Alonzo Byrd looked on. Both businesses they represnted were sponsors of Live Off the Levee.
The VIP crowd. If you look hard enough you will see Something Blue's Larry Blure getting ready to sit down and photographer Lance Omar Thurman walking with his cam.
YOURS TRULY, Ma'at Atkins took a pic near the backstage area of the concert. (Photo by Lance Omar Thurman)
Hamilton performed various non-hits from his CD'sComin' from Where I'm From, Soulife and Ain't Nobody Worryin'.
He was also quite comical. He told the crowd, "I ain't come here by mistake, I came on purpose." Then asked the crowd, "Did you stumble here in this place. I don't believe it if you did." He then introduced a new song, "The Point of it All," from his upcoming CD of the same title and was well receieved by the feedback from the crowd.
As the concert went on, he got out of that hat cuz the sweatin he was doin was comin from where he was from! LOL. He also got poiltical when he announced a couple times that folk needs to support and vote State Treausurer candidate Andria Simckes in November.
He got up close and personal with the crowd--which is an understatement (as you will see in a few pics).
....and got a chance to get that hand.
THESE NEXT SET OF PICS WE LIKE TO CALL HAMILTON's HOLY HIP STROLL
He was gettin all up in the mix duirng his cover of the OJays' "Stairway to Heaven" and segued into, his popular hit, "Sister Big Boned."
Hamilton walked to stage left and jumped off the stage and did his shake a hand dance in the VIP area as the crowd crowded around him.
Meanwhile, as Hamiltion was taking a brief break, he gave his wife Tarsha McMillan a few minutes to perform songs from her CD, "The McMillan Project," including the songs Second to Nothin," and "Reachin Out" garnering much cheers and applause from the crowd.
He later changed attire to continue his set including his last major hit, "Can't Let Go." A few minutes later, he gave a PSA about watching young children and the adults that are awrouind them. "A child can see what you can't see. So, no Santa Claus on the lap, Pappa Claus, or Uncle Claus. Protect them."
"Sing it, baby!"
Hamilton ended his set with his first hit, "Comin from Where I'm From" and telling the crowd to be careful walking around with the small children in the Park.
As we walked out of the Park area. There were tens of thousands that were in the vicinity. As you see, they were hangin out on one of the city court buildings during the concert.
They also had a big screen while the concert was going on. A few thousand were watching the concert from it.
Folk were loungin big time up in there. We managed to leave out 10 minutes after leaving VIP!
EVENT VIEWZ. Overall the turnout at this concert at Live (Off )the Levee was overwhelmingly packed. We estimate it had to have been AT LEAST 50, 000 folk there. The additional 30,000 we are sure came from the African Methodist Episcopal chruch Convention that was goin on downtown.
But there were some drawbacks:
1.As we were waiting to get inside the Park, Market Street was not closed off for the event. Cars were driving as people were trying to walk across the street to get to the entrance area. Now if you have an event where there's Johnny on the Spots on a busy street and the cross streets, you would think the street would be closed off. Anyone could have gotten ran over or killed(One guy almost got hit but crossed the street in time.)
2.As the crowd were admitted inside, there was only one guy who was there at the security checkpoint. He was there to check bags, but the search was a once over by looking down in the bag and thats it! No wand, no take your items out , NOTHIN! Anyone could have snuck anything up in therre from a deadly weapon to fireworks! What made it even wilder was, the guy told one person they couldnt bring coolers in, but what was the purpose of saying that when he didnt check bags to see what was in those!

3.THe VIP area. Each year Live on the Levee has paper stickers for those who are VIP to put on their person to receive close proximity to the stage area. Well, this year, because of the venue change from the Archgrounds to the Park, the VIP area was sitting in front of the stage (as opposed to standing near the sides of the stage from previous years , which in some sense, better as far as viewing), but the problem occurred as far as those in VIP not getting access to the two VIP beer booths on both sides of the stage. VIPers had to have had a VIP bracelet for entrance. Now this was confusing. Now, if you are VIP already, why do you need a VIP bracelet to enter to PURCHASE beer at the VIP Beer booth (In previous years, the VIP sticker was enough for entrance in VIP which also had the VIP beer booth in the vicinity)? The security was more tighter with VIP than it was at the admittance area for the general public!
4.And the media area was not fully understood as far as where we needed to be. We just stook a chance while getting stopped at the VIP Beer Booth without a bracelet to find out we were able to get near the stage to click shots.
5.And the exiting of the Park was horrible! People were gridlocked where the Big Screen where the concert was televsied whuich was where the exit/entrance area was. Folk were getting their feet and children stepped on and the pushing to get to the exit was NOT a pretty site. It would have been better if they had blockades in that area for exiting to be much easier.
But we digress
Besides these things, the concert was great.

AND NOW TO THE A&E NEWZ FROM THE ILLI AND MO:
The big entertainment newz story was mos definitely was the Michael Jackson memorial that was held Tuesday at the Staples Center in L.A. where his golden casket was wheeled for the services where thousands attended. Those who performed and participated included
(a very pregnant) Chicago native Jennifer Hudson (PICTURED who performed Jackson’s song, “ Will You Be There”) as well as MariahCarey,Lionel Richie Stevie Wonder (highlight), Usher (another highlight) John Mayer, and Jermaine Jackson. Eulogizers included Queen Latifah(who read the poemWE HAD HIM written for the occasion by St. Louis native Maya Angelou) , Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson (who read telegrams by non attendees nelson Mandela and Diana Ross) , Rev. AlSharpton (highlight), Brooke Shields, Kobe Bryant and Majic Johnson and Jackson’s brother and daughter Marlon and Paris (another highlight). In attendance were Justin Timberlake; Gladys Knight; Lil Kim,LisaRaye, Kyla Pratt, and Chris tucker. It was reported that over 6 BILLION people viewed the event either on TV or on the Net (OUTTOWN followed it via facebook and CNN. Com). The event fell also on the day that Jackson was supposed to begin his final tour This IS ITiat O2 Arena in London. There, it was reported this week that a second memorial will be scheduled for Jackson on the singer’s 51st birthday on Aug. 29.
We are sure we speak for everybody who are MJ fans, that this is still hard to process that he has left this Earth and that this will be the talk of the world forever and forever. Later on YOURS TRULY, MA;at Atkins will give his memories of the King of Pop.

And speaking of baseball, we totally went under the radar and didn’t realize that recently signed Cardinals player Brian Barton was no longer playing with Cards . He was traded at the beginning of this season. Barton made the Cardinals' big-league roster and made his debut last April . On April 20 of this year, Barton was traded to the Atlanta Braves for relief pitcherBlaine Boyer.
On Sunday. MediaTakeOut.com reported that Chicago based rapper Kanye West and his former mentor Jay Z reportedly got into a screaming match backstage at London's Wireless festival in the UK. According to one of MediaTakeOut.com's snitches, Kanye was scheduled to close the show and he wanted to bring Jay Z out with him. But the snitch claimed that Jay wanted to close the show himself. The two reportedly got into a "heated" screaming match which ended with Jay Z leaving the arena without performing. Hmm, we wonder of it ha dto do anything with Jay Z releasing his latest single, “Death of the Autotune” knowing that Kanye’s last CD, “Heartbreak and 808s’ was Autotuned driven. (He also worked with Autotune king T-Pain on his last CD "Graduiation" on the Grammy winning tune, "Good Life." ) So, who knows.

MJ BITZ. Now as I gather my thoughts about the earthly passing of Michael Jackson. I reflect on four memory moments of the King of Pop.
My first early memory was when I was a preteen and I bought the “Off the Wall” album. As a child, many people said I looked liked him when he was a child. Well, maybe that was my first attraction to the singer, but I was enthralled as with many others on Michael when ‘Off the wall’ was released in 1979. I recall during Christmas of 1979, my nuclear family traveled to Pine Bluff, Ark to visit my maternal grandmother. Well, I brought the Off the wall and played it over and over on my g-mom’s very huge stereo player. I would open up the album where when you open it , it had a full body image of Jackson in a black suit, Afro, and those white glowing socks. I would look at the album cover for hours while playing the album (I even took a Polaroid picture of it crazy as I was back then.) It was during one of those record playing sessions, where some of my cousins came to the house. I had lied the album upright next to one of the big beds in one of the three bedrooms and one of my girl cousins accidentally fell toward it and ripped it in the middle of the album. I was crushed. So, I got some black tape and tried taping the middle portion of the album and still stood it up so I could see his full body shot as I played the album over my grandmoms house with tape at his midsection. LOL.
The second was during a family reunion in 1983 when Thriller was the hottest album out there. At one of the community centers in Pine Bluff, Ark, we had a dance and the dee-jay played, “Billie Jean” and my family members started to form a Soul train line. Well, with my being a good dancer then, I decided to do the Moonwalk on my turn going down the line and I was the highlight of the reunion.
The third was seeing MJ in concert with my high school girlfriend at the Checkerdome in 1988 during his Bad tour. It was during when he was supposed to perform for three nite sstraight and he was ill with the flu. He canceled the first night I think, performed at the second (which I attended) and cancelled the third to make up for the first nite. I was in the nosebleed seats, but I was there to experience the Magic of Michael as I kept shouting out, “Sing Man In the Mirror”’ (This was after he performed at the Grammys and did his now electric set of “The Way You make me Feel and “Man in the Mirror”)
And lastly, when I co-produced the fashion show production “LeDragvaganza’ in 2002 with the late poet/attorney Sheryl Johnson at her gallery Hatshepsut Studio/Art Gallery that was locate don 12th and Washington in downtown STL. One of the scenes was a model modeling an ensem under Michael’s song, :”butterflies.” She was not comfortable with her routine she choreographed for some reason, so at the day of the show, I decided to do a Michael Jackson routine with white shirt, black fedora, and black hot water pants and black church shoes. LOL. From what people told me, it was one of the highlights of the show as I morphed into Michael doing his infamous dance moves and his 360 robot turn.
And those were my four Michael memories.

OUT 850--ILLI MO (A&E) BITZ
HAPPY B-DAY OUTTOWN!TIME TO GET TOWNED!
THIS
JUST ANNOUNCED:
The Prime Time Emmy Award nominations were just announced Thursday andSTL native JonHamm was again nominated as lead actor in a drama for "Mad Men." He'll compete with Bryan Cranston("Breaking Bad"); Michael C. Hall ("Dexter"); Hugh Laurie ("House"); Matthew Fox ("Lost"); and Kyle Chandler ("Friday Night Lights"). Hammwas also nominated as guest actor in a comedy for "30 Rock."
"Mad Men" was also nominated as outstanding drama series.
THE BIG STORY in THE ILLMOA&E BITZ this week is:
Speaking of lawsuits involving aChitown based artist, rapper Kanyewas sued over song infringement. Vincent Peters, a rap artist who goes by the stage name Vince P., is suing the hip hop superstar for stealing his work.
According to court documents filed on June 25 with the U.S. District Court in northern Illinois, Peters claims he wrote and recorded a song in 2006 called “Stronger” that ended up in the hands of long-time West business manager John Monopoly. Seven months later, West released his own song called “Stronger” that the suit says “copies significant and important” portions of Peters’ song.
In Peters’ complaint, he argues that the refrain, or “hook,” of West’s “Stronger” is similar to what Peters wrote. “The hook portions of both songs constitute the most memorable portion of the song and make the songs appealing to the ear of the listener,” the suit stated.
Some of the lyrics in question are:
Peters’ “Stronger”
AND
N- n- now th- that don’t kill me can only make me stronger
On his Myspace page, he said URB Magazine named him a “next 100 Artist of 2008.” He has a recent Billboard hit called “Girls in the Club.” Earlier this year, he registered “Stronger” with the U.S. Copyright office, allowing him to sue West for copyright infringement.
However, it’s unclear why he waited three years to copyright "Stronger" then sue West. He did not immediately respond to an interview request sent to an e-mail address mentioned in the court documents.
On Twitter, where Peters lists his locations as Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C., he acknowledged his beef with West. “Too bad Kanye's Team is like the British and Team Vince P is the American Revolution,” he wrote. “Last week was just the TEA PARTY....”
In his lawsuit, Peters is demanding that West, as well as the recording companies of Roc-a-Fella Records LLC and UMG Recordings Inc., stop performing, reproducing and selling West’s “Stronger.” Peters is also asking for an unspecified amount of money.
He is requesting that a jury rule on his suit.
Hmmm, on both R Kelly and Ye suits, we think that both will probably settle out of court. As far as Peters waiting three years after writing, “Stronger” to copyright it. Well, that can be a lil fuzzy. It could have been that Peters probably “registered" the song to the US Copyright office which is different than an actual copyright. If a work isnt published, or produced for commercial release to the public, then it has to be registered by the author. If it is set for publishing, then a work is “re-registered” as a copyrighted work. And that was probably the case with Peters when he worked with Monopoly—registered the song. afterthat, who knows what happened. It could have been the scenario thatMonoploy got the song from P, gave it to Ye, he changed it up and recorded it and published it with a different registering as an actual copyright. A familiar game in the biz.
UPDATE: "Power" debuts on this week's Billboard Hot 100 at #22.

The big STL-OCAL STORY is:
The end of 60 plus year old classical station KFUO (99.1 FM) Tuesday with the playing of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, "Choral" as several hundred people came attended to witness the end.
Its owner, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, has sold the signal of St. Louis’ classical music station to Gateway Creative Broadcasting’s JOY-FM, which was approved by FCC in May, which will use the signal for Christian contemporary pop music, which began Wednesday.
On a Facebook page called "Stop the Sale of KFUO Classic 99 in St. Louis!," WLarry wrote, "as a Christian, I am sickened by this sale. I feel like I'm experiencing the death of a close friend."
From what we hear, it is more people approving of the change than those who wanted the station to remain classical. If folk wanted it to stay, where was thr protest in May? Hello?

Last week,Chitiown native R&B star R. Kelly was slapped with a lawsuit from a former employee over allegations of unpaid wages. The singer reportedly was accused of failing to compensate Anthony Navarro for overtime hours he racked up in 2007, while Kelly was on tour.
In his legal papers, filed in an Illinois court, Navarro claims he and his fellow workers reportedly were sometimes forced to work more than 80 hours a week to help with studio and tour preparations. They were reportedly contracted to be paid time-and-a-half for the additional hours but Navarro alleges he was only paid at the normal rate.
He has also named Kelly's production company, Bass Productions Ltd., in the lawsuit and has cited the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act and the Illinois Minimum Wage Law in his court filing.

What don’t kill me make me stronger
The more I blow up the more you wronger
You coped my CD you can feel my hunger
The wait is over couldn’t wait no longer
AND
West’s “Stronger”
N- n- now th- that don’t kill me can only make me stronger
I need you to hurry up now cause I can’t wait much longer
I know I got to be right now cause I can’t get much wronger
Man I’ve been waitin’ all night now that’s how long I’ve been on you
Both songs also mention fashion model Kate Moss, “a highly unusual and incongruous reference in a hip-hop song,” according to the complaint. (HMMM GIVEWAY RIGHT HERE!)
Documents explain that in 2006, Peters approached Monopoly, who was the co-founder of Chicago-based Hustle Period Entertainment, about him becoming Peters’ executive producer. As part of the process, Peters sent Monopoly several of his songs, including “Stronger.”

OUT 1021--ILLI MO arts and ent BITZ (July 7-13)
HEY OUTTOWNERS!
IT’S A SPECIAL TIME!!
OUTTOWN IS SIX YEARS OLD!!!
On July 8, 2005, YOURS TRULY decided to publish a weekly blog to extend to my entertainment reporting after writing for print publications St Louis American, Flipside Newzine and the West End Word. 1,000 plus posts and thousands and thousands and thousands of pics and news stories later, OUTTOWN is one of the venerable blogs not just based in the St Louis area but across the United States. ABOVE is the very first pic that was taken for OUTTOWN of YOURS TRULY taking a pic with actress Dawnn Lewis at Joe Torry's Basketball Challenge Meet and Greet at the Airport Hilton that was posted on July 20, 2005.
CHECK OUT A SPECIAL OUTTOWN TRIBUTE THAT WILL POST THIS FRIDAY!!!
THE BIG A&ENEWZ STORY IS:
Motion Picture Academy sources that Chicago talk show queen Oprah Winfrey is topping the list of candidates to host the 84th Oscars next February. In unrelated newz, Winfrey will teach a high school class called It's Life 101 to girls at a school she opened in South Africa.

St. Joseph, Mo native and Grammy/Oscar winning rapperEminem became the first artist to sell over 1 million digital copies . He did it with his Grammy Award winning CD, “Recovery: that was released in 2010.
In unrelated Em newz,Rapper Eminem is inviting Facebook users to prove how "bad" or "evil" they can be with his new Facebook game.
The game , titled "Bad Meets Evil," is described as "a violent, sadistic, and brutal virtual world inspired by rap duo Bad Meets Evil."
In the game users "roam about a depraved virtual wasteland of Detroit populated with society's seedy outcasts, complete sinister missions, and engage in bloody, brutal battles to prove just how Bad or Evil they are."
The ultimate goal is to reach hell.
The game, Mashable reported, coincides with the recently released EPtitled "Hell: The Sequel" that Eminem released with his hip-hop duo side project that includes Royce Da 5'9.
Chicagoans Kanye West and Jennifer Hudson were the ILLI MOians who performed at this year's Essence Music Festival in New Orleans during the Fourth of July weekend at the Louisiana Superdome. Hudson shared the main stage Friday with fellowAmerical Idol contestant Fantasia Her set included her cover of the Michael Jackson tribute “I’ll Be There,” J-Hud brought out another former Idol contestant — her current backup singer, George Huff. Then Saturday night’s headliner, Kanye West, was essentially id decked out in a sporty white blazer. The Chicago MC arrived through the air via a cable-enabled lift before he got off and had a Rudyard Kipling-inspired moment and walked through the crowd to reach the stage for "Power."
From reports, West’s show was a mix of his Coachella set (in three acts) and his VMA performance (red suit) but with a nod to the Essence crowd, as he finished with a stirring musical testimony to his mother, "Hey Mama."
"It feels so good to be back home," 'Ye told the audience – not unlikeBlige, preaching the power of healing. "When I say home, I mean my people. I travel the world. I been around the world. I got into a little trouble. A little controversy here and there. But before I go any further in the show, I wanna thank you for coming out and still supporting me."
Grammy Award winning and Chicago native Chaka Khan is facing legal action over missed payments on a rental home in New Jersey. Khan and her manager Tammy McCrary signed a contract to lease a mansion inWatchung for two weeks during the month of June. However, landlord Maryse Selit claims Khan left town after the first week without paying for the rest of the stay, causing the propertyagent to miss out on otherbusiness.
THE BIG STL STORY THIS WEEK IS:
Sixteen days after fracturing a bone in his left wrist, three-time National League MVP Albert Pujols returned to the Cardinals' active roster Tuesday, cleared by the team's doctor to resume his duties as first baseman on the first day he was eligible to come off the disabled list. La Russadidn't start Pujols after what the manager called a "rigorous workout" on Tuesday and said he didn't find the appropriate time to use him in an 8-1 victory against the Reds.
When the fracture on the wrist-end tip ofPujols' radius bone was discovered on June 20, the team announced that his recovery would be at least four weeks and possibly more than six. Pujols was expected to be in a soft cast for four weeks. Tuesday's return means he was ready to play two weeks before he was originally scheduled to pick up a bat for the first time.
Hmmm, Pujols has healed very quickly. Speculations are definitely running as to his healing process as well as the speedy recovery efforts to keep his hanging free agency next season still up for grabs.

Due to the weather conditions in the St. Louis metropolitan area, Fair St. Louis announced the cancellation of the July 3rd' Maroon 5 concert and the US Bank/Enterprise fireworks. All other activities were likewise canceled.
Bob Schenk, spokesman for Fair St. Louis reportedly explains, “It was gut-wrenching. There were people in tears and I'm talking about Fair St. Louis staff. We spend a year putting this on, but ultimately you have to be realistic and look at the Archgrounds, the water, the equipment.”
It's safety first, according toSchenk. Canceling the show obviously disappoints fans, but it also cuts into the bottom line, “Most immediately, it impacts the vendors. They look for a good portion of their sales at the concerts.”
But fair organizers are quick to point out there was far more sunshine than rain over the long holiday weekend.
The crowds were strong, though the fair doesn't release official numbers. Schenk points out the other activities that Mother Nature did not tinker with went off without a hitch, “We look at the entire event, from the Steve Miller Band to Montgomery Gentry to the fireworks and air show; net it was a wonderful weekend in downtown St. Louis.”
Other special guests from the venue's past, present and future will be in the house as well.
Rockers Eddie Vedder and Elvis Costello were in St Louis July 1 and performed at separate venues The Fox and The Pageant respectively. But much to the Pageant fans surprise, Vedder showed up at Costello's set to perform an impromptu performance of the song, “Substitute” before Vedder went to the Fox Theatre. ILLI MO SPOTLIGHT
First Lady Michelle Obama is the Cover Lady for the August issue of Essence magazine. In the main article, she reportedly talked about her daughters, Sasha and Malia.
She says,"The people we admire in our society today are athletes, singers, reality stars. You don't see teachers an doctors and lawyers revered in the same way. So, naturally, kids gravitate to what they think is cool. But one of the things I've tried to tell my girls, and try to tell all the children I talk to, is that there is nothing cooler than having a good education," she says, adding: "We talk about responsibility and accountability, about making sure they're not wasting the opportunities they're given. We make sure they know how lucky they are and that, because of that, they have an obligation to have their acts together and take their education very seriously."

This is her fifth time on the cover.
The Chicago Bulls are reportedly interested in free agent shooting guard Dwyane Wade if the Chicago native decides to leave the Miami Heat, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. LeBron James' decision to depart from South Beach and return home to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers is reportedly rippling through free agency.
Wade reportedly met with the Bulls during free agency in 2010 but re-signed with Miami. James and former Heat teammate Chris Bosh are both preparing for returns to their home states, and Wade may have the option of doing the same for himself.
If Wade does come to the Bulls that would definitely bring some heat to the team, pun intended.

In addition, the network confirmed the line-up of series
regulars for Saul, set to premiere in early 2015.
Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad. Vince Gilligan andBreaking Bad writer and producer Peter Gould created the show together and serve as co-showrunners of the premiere season. The series is set six years before Saul Goodman (Odenkirk) meets Walter White. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. The series’ tone is dramatic, woven through with dark humor.
As previously announced, Breaking Bad creator and showrunner Vince Gilligan directed the first episode of the series, which has already been greenlit for a second season of 13 episodes. The debut season will consist of 10 episodes.
At this years Essence Musical Festival at the Superdome New Orleans during the July 4 holiday, there were many surprise performances two in particular was during the Roots set with ILLI MO rap artists Common (PICTURED LEFt) and Nelly.
Don Cheadle; Miles Davis
Along with his new Emmy nomination, actor Cheadle is now directing and starring in a new film about Alton, Ill native jazz legend Miles Davis titled Miles Ahead that focuses on Davis’ “silent period,” when he stopped making music. The biopic also takes a look at his marriage to Frances Taylor Davis and, finally, the creation of Davis’ 1968 album In a Silent Way.
Last month Cheadle launched an IndieGoGo campaign to secure funding for his movie, and with less than 33 hours to go, so far it’s short $17,000 of the $325,000 goal. Cheadle, who has been a Davis fan since he started playing the saxophone in the fifth grade, talked about his move to fund the movie via social media and reach out to the music community. “While Miles used his horn to communicate and create ‘social music,’ are using social media and today’s online platforms to reach out to the music community, the film community, and people who are excited to see an explosive, cool, music-filled movie,” Cheadle said.
Unlike several announcements about biopics of deceased singers, what makes Cheadle’s stand out is the support from Davis’ family. Not only did the family pinpoint Cheadle as the actor early on, but the record labels that Davis worked with gave Cheadle their full cooperation.
Miles Ahead is now shooting in Cincinnati. Co-starring with Don Cheadle are Ewan McGregor, Michael Stuhlbarg and Emayatzy Corinealdi. No release date has yet been set.
Can we say Oscar?

This story was wriiten Yesha Callahan is editor of The Grapevine and a staff writer at The Root.
Robbins, Ill actress/singer Keke Palmer is making waves these days. She just launched her talk show Just Keke on BET and she is still getting talk about the revealing dress she wore at the BET Awards recently. The 20-year-old turned heads in a scandalous mini dress that featured cutouts highlighting her hips and cleavage.
The Alon Livnedress metallic dress definitely flaunted Palmer's toned figure and also proved that she ditched underwear for the big event.
Well, she is no longer that little girl from Nickelodean;s True Jackson thats for sure!
St Louis based docuseries Welcome To Sweetie Pies will return for a fourth season Saturday, July 12 on OWN. he Image Award winning series starring soul food chef and Sweetie Pie’s restaurant owner Miss Robbie Montgomery and her son, Tim, prepare to expand their restaurant empire beyond St. Louis with a new location on historic Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. Meanwhile, back in St. Louis, Tim struggles with planning the move to Memphis while continuing to manage the local restaurants, and hires a new district manager, Ma’ri, who quickly implements change and starts ruffling the staff's feathers. Miss Robbie is also moving ahead with launching her new Sweetie Pie’s Sweet Tea line.
Another St Louis based docuseries is about to join in the pantheon of reality based shows. The Lifetime cable channel is giving us a peek of its upcoming series titled "BAPs," which is about an "exclusive, privileged and affluent group of African-American friends from St. Louis who self-identify as 'BAPs' -- Black American Princesses and Princes."
The show will premiere July 23 on Lifetime.

We hear that during its promo at the Essence Festival at a question and answer session there was a mass exodus to the exits during the screening. Hmm. Well lets hope that this isnt an indication about the series itself because the show's premise is definitely interesting.
STL SPOTLIGHT
ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals were dealt a huge blow to their hopes for consecutive National League pennants Thursday when All-Star catcher Yadier Molina was diagnosed with a torn thumb ligament that could end his season.
Molina, who undergone surgery on Friday, will be out eight to 12 weeks, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said. He still is holding out hope that Molina will return by the season's end.
"I almost cried,'' Molina said, when he was told the news.
Molina, a six-time Gold Glove winner and six-time All-Star, is widely considered the Cardinals' most valuable player, not only handling the pitching staff, but controlling the running game while batting in the middle of the order.
Tony Cruz, Molina's backup, will be the everyday catcher for now while the Cardinals look for catching help. Veteran catchers A.J Pierznyski and John Buck recently were designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners,
In regards to his spot in he All Star game he will be replaced by Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero. Brewers backstop Jonathan Lucroy, who was elected on the players' ballot, will start the game in Molina's place.

Wow talk about a omen. Remember The Brewers' smear ad campaign on Molina being chosen over Lucroy? Geesh!
From a report from stltoday.com, Fair St. Louis officials are feeling some heat over the placement of R&B acts En Vogue and Musiq Soulchild on last Saturday afternoon in Forest Park.
St. Louis Treasurer Tishaura O. Jones attended the festival Saturday with her father and son, and after the event took to Twitter to post a complaint.
“So ... am I the only one wondering why the ‘Black’ entertainment wasn’t on the main stage at the Fair this year?” she tweeted. “In years past I’ve seen Smokey Robinson, John Legend, Al Green all on the main stage. What’s with the switch?”
En Vogue, Musiq Soulchild and local R&B cover band Dirty Muggs performed on a side stage. Main stage acts on Saturday were the Fray, the Neighbourhood and Capital Cities.
Other Fair St. Louis main stage acts this year were Bonnie Raitt, Gavin DeGraw, Mary Lambert, the Band Perry and Thompson Square.
“I noticed when I looked at the schedule all the African-American acts were stacked back-to-back while there was nothing going on on the main stage. It was packed with people there to see En Vogue, who have a huge following,” Jones said Tuesday.
“I figured there was a rhyme and reason, that it may not have been their intent. But it felt like they were basically segregating all the black acts to a particular time slot and a particular stage.”
Alonzo Byrd, a Fair St. Louis board member who has talked to Jones about her concerns, said he understands the complaints.
“I know what it looked like,” said Byrd, assistant vice president of public affairs for Enterprise Holdings. “I even brought this up back in January and February and said, ‘Why is it this way?’ and ‘Why is it that way?’”
Byrd pointed out that Fair St. Louis has a long history of African-American acts on the main stage, including John Legend, the Isley Brothers, Isaac Hayes, Al Green, Patti LaBelle and Smokey Robinson.
He also mentioned the accompanying Celebrate St. Louis Summer Concert events in years past that have included Common, Soulchild, Bell Biv DeVoe and Nelly as headliners. (Celebrate St. Louis concerts won’t be held this summer.)
Well, this is very glaring for sure. Diversity needs to be addressed especially now that a political official made it an issue and with the Fair being a community based event OIL and WATER could occur. So we are sure the Fair committee will have to address this issue for next year's Fair.

Why do you think Lebron returned to Cleveland? Why does
it seem Joan Rivers walked off her interview on CNN for
publicity for her book? Why did Sherri Shepherd's soon to
be ex husband served her divorce papers right before she was
going on sage at the Essence Festival? Why did Lil Mo go in on Twitter about Prince backstage at the Essence Festival about New Orleans police pushing her back when he was about to hit stage? And why did she say he didnt hit the notes on stage? Why are people tripping
off Kelly Rowland getting her fitness on while preggo? Why
is Columbus short spiraling out of control? Why did someone leak
raw vocals of Britney Spears? And why do people have loud conversations over their cell phone in public?

THE TOP ILLI-MO STORY THIS WEEK IS:
Former Chicagoan Lester Holt is continuing to make NBC Nightly News
a ratings winner ever since he replaced Brian Williams last week as permanent anchor after the network investigation of Williams fabricating stories including his visit to Iraq. Holt has also made history as the first African American to solo anchor a nightly newscast on broadcast TV (Bernard Shaw was the first on cable TV at CNN).
Now we wonder if NBC will up his salary to match Williams' 10 milli a year
now that ratings have risen. He reportedly gets 5 milli.
And speaking of hosting duties, NBC's Today announced this week that. Kansas City, Mo native/St Louis bred actress Ellie Kemper (PICTURED with Today weatherman Al Roker) is joining the Today Show anchors on a temporary basis for a month as various members of the team go on vacation. The former co-star of "The Office" can currently be seen on the Netflix-com Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
The first day of shooting on Season 2 of Fox’s blockbuster
One of the scene shot was a jail scene with Chicago native
actor Terrence Howard (PICTURED with Chris Rock and
Empire co-creator Lee Daniels) playing record label mogul
Luscious and comedian Chris Rock guest starring as a jail
mate. The season returns Sept 23.
We were remiss to report of the win of a musical with St
Louis ties that won big at this year's Tony Awards a couple
weeks ago. Nominated for 12 Tonies, the musical “Fun Home,” took home the Tony Award for best musical. It also picked up four more awards for best actor, best book, best score and best director.
The St Louis ties are the show’s lead producers that won for Best Musical. They are are St. Louis-based Fox Theatricals whose parent company is Fox Associates. In that company are three St. Louis women: Mary Strauss, Lisa Baudendistel-Suntrup and her sister, Julie Baudendistel-Noonan.
Other “Fun Home” producers with strong St. Louis ties are Mike Isaacson, artistic director and executive producer of the Muny as well as executive producer at Fox Theatricals; Fox Theatricals president Kristin Caskey, who heads the theater on Grand Boulevard; Jack Lane, executive producer of Stages St. Louis; and Terry Schnuck, a veteran producer on and off-Broadway.
The show, based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel memoir about growing up with a closeted dad in a funeral home and the first musical to have a lesbian as its main character.

We were also remiss of the documentary that aired on ESPN this month with St. Louis Rams defensive ends Chris Long (RIGHT) and William Hayes who went undercover to experience life among the homeless, bringing awareness to an issue.
The NFL players went on a unique journey documented in aSportsCenter special titled "Life On the Streets."
We were supposed to stay in a shelter after our first night on the streets before our cover was blown. [...] We were apprehensive about allowing those cameras along with us in our experience. ESPN hit us up a few days before.
BELOW IS LONG's COMMENTS ABOUT THE ADVENTURE:
I think raisi ng awareness is Long spoke extensively on Twitter about how what he saw impacted his view of homelessness
It was important on a lot of levels but the thing I took away was the human element of the problem. Awareness can't fix everything, and just 2 days and a night on the street didn't give us any answers. It did however give us perspective.I hope that I can give more of my time, energy and resources to the cause in the future. William has been a real champ the last few years. [...] I do regret not being able to stay out longer. A stay in one of St. Louis' shelters would have been very valuable. We were found out day 2.
The report by Merrill includes the footage and indicates the idea to don a homeless disguise was hatched on the Rams' team bus. Hayes initially recommended it to Long, who decided to join him.
Hayes and Long hit the streets March 22, with makeup and clothing to mask their identities. They each had just $4 and resorted to panhandling as a result.

Why is their uproar now about taking down the Confederate flag after the Charleston, SC Nine were killed? Why is a former star of the Dukes of Hazzard who is now a politician flaunting supporting the Confederate flag? Why did POTUS get so much flack for saying the N word when talking about racism? Why did P Diddy try and use a cowbell to fight the coach of his son's football team? Why did it take Taylor Swift's rant for Apple Music stream company to pay artists during the three month trial period of their music being streamed on there? Why did CNBC take this long to take Sarah Palin off the air? And why does it seem as though she leaked her daughter being preggo for publicity? Why does Janet always whispers in her recordings post-janet. 1993 album? Why are Ariana Grande fans going crazy that she got rid of her signature ponytail? Why did Rick Ross lock his groundskeeper at his mansion up in the guest house and pistol whipped him? And why does homeless people always use a piece of raggedy cardboard and write in marker when they are asking for assistance?
