THE TOP ILLI/MO STORY THIS WEEK IS:

The President and First Lady hosted music legends and top gospel artists at the White House this week for the latest installment of “In Performance at the White House.” The evening of musical performances paid tribute to the fundamental role that gospel music has played in shaping American history and culture.

President Obama opened the East Wing celebration by

thanking the evening’s special guests, which included T

Bone Burnett Aretha Franklin, and master of ceremonies

Robin Roberts. The night included performances

by  Pastor Shirley Caesar, Darlene Love, Rhiannon

Giddens, Rance Allen, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell,
Tamela Mann, Lyle Lovett, and the Morgan State University
 Choir.
In his remarks, the President noted the unique and influential

history of gospel music, explaining that many of America’s

favorite genres — including jazz, Motown, blues, and

country — can be traced back to gospel music.

.

Prior to the evening’s performances, First Lady Michelle

Obama welcomed more than 130 students from across the

country to take part in an interactive student workshop on

the origins of gospel music that included question-and-

answer sessions with the evening’s performers and a

discussion on the importance of music in young people’s

 lives.

The entirety of the celebration of gospel music will air on PBS stations nationwide on June 26 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

TIME magazine has released their list of the 100 Most
Influential People that shaped this past year and some
people featured in the magazine may surprise you.
Popular names on the list include Kanye West, Kim
Kardashian and Bradley Cooper. TIME found these
celebrities have most impacted this past year, along with
other list makers, such as President Barack Obama, Hillary
Clinton, Jeb Bush, Pope Francis, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and
Malala Yousafzai.
There are five different magazine covers that feature Kanye
West, Bradley Cooper, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, ballet dancer
Misty Copeland and news anchor from Univision Jorge
Ramos.  The list is broken up into five categories which is
Titans, Pioneers, Artists, Leaders and Icons.
The issue hits newsstand on Friday.

Actor and game show host Terry Crews hosted this year's TV Land Awards this week and to open the show, he lip synched some of TV's most classic TV theme songs, one beingThe Golden Girls. In the audience was Oak Park, Ill native IBetty White, who played naive Rose on the show  was in attendance and Crews headed over to her to lip sing the Golden Girls theme song Thank You For Being a Friend to her .
The Awards airs this Saturday on TV Land.

Newbie U.S. talk show host James Corden had Chicago native singer/actress Jennifer Hudson on his talk show, "The Late, Late Show," this week where she and Corden starred in one of his skits
.
After roping in Mariah Carey for some carpool karaoke, James called upon J.Hud, and she joined him in 'carpool karaoke.'

In the skit, while James Corden took the wheel, Hudon gives

renditions of some of her most famous songs, including 'If

This Isn't  Love,' her Dreamgirls soundtrack song 'And I Am

Telling You I'm Not Going' and

 the new Iggy collabo'Trouble.'

But the best part of the journey is when Corden makes a stop

at a drive through and J-Hud decides to sing his order of a

cheeseburger, fries and diet coke, much to the employees

 amusement.

Hilarious and quite clever to create carpool karaoke. It could possibly be the next social media phenomenon.

Amazon Prime will be joining forces with Spike Lee to help him with his latest movie project. The movie, Chiraq, will deal with gun violence in Chicago. The movie will reportedly star Samuel L. Jackson, Kanye West, Common and Jeremy Piven.

The controversy is in the title, which is a slang term for describing the violent side of Chicago. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, one time Chief Of Staff for President Obama, has already expressed his displeasure at the title publicly and in a meeting with Spike Lee.

As of press time, Lee hasn’t commented publicly about his meeting with Mayor Emanuel. Both men have well publicized reputations for not pulling punches in meetings.

We can understand the mayor's issues but the word has already permeated in social media. Lee  is infamous for pushing the envelope on social commentary in his films. But the problem stems from Lee wanted tax credits from the city to pay for the film, thus Emmanuel's dissonance.

St Louis reared rap mogul Nelly is still scheduled to perform during the Corner Block Party at Auburn University on Saturday, despite being arrested on drug charges earlier this month.
Sagar Leva, University Program Council director of major entertainment, told the Auburn Plainsman that as of Monday the show will still go on as scheduled. He will be joined by Kesha and Nick Jonas.
Nelly, was arrested April 11 by the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The patrol said in a news release that investigators found five rocks that tested positive for methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and numerous handguns on the rapper's bus.
A Nelly concert scheduled for April 23 at Missouri State University has been canceled, though an official reason was not given.
His attorney, Scott Rosenblum said in a statement that Nelly will "not be associated with the contraband" once the facts come out.
Nelly was released from Putnam County Jail on $10,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court in June,

This is the second time that Nelly has been in this situation with drugs on a tour bus within a two year period but like any life issue-- a man/woman still gotta eat. Did Missouri State jump the gun? Its likely. But I guess they didnt want to take any chances of the entourage coming with possible security problems. But this go round could be a stinger for Nelly even if he is cleared of all charges. His legacy could be tarnished a bit with these runs ins but we will see how he fares when he goes to court.

The late adopted Chicagoan  and blues legend Muddy Waters' estate is in the middle of a legal dispute.
The daughter and widow of  Waters had gone to court Thursday over Waters' estate to challenge ownership of assets, including copyrights to his music.
Mercy Morganfield, Waters' daughter, reportedly filed a petition on behalf of Marva Morganfield, his widow, ahead of the probate hearing Thursday, according to theChicago Tribune. In the petition, Morganfield asks that Waters' estate be reopened and Morganfield appointed administrator to distribute the remaining assets, which include the copyrights.
The executor of Waters' estate was the late Scott Cameron, who used to manage the musician. Cameron then managed his estate, which closed in 1987, when Waters' died in 1983.
Cameron died in February, and the executor duties were handed off to the Missouri-based Cameron Organisation. Now, the Morganfields would like to take over.

The Morganfields reportedly have received regular royalty payments since Waters' death, but Mercy Morganfield alleges in the petition that Cameron missed a payment in December. She also claims he did not provide proper estate accounting, according to the Tribune.
Attorneys representing the Cameron Organisation said the Morganfields do not have the legal standing to reopen the estate, the Tribune reported.

As of press time, no verdict has been reported.

We think the Morganfields should have the right to reopen the estate now that the former executive died.

Keep On Keepin' On is coming to Netflix on April 17, the streaming service told The Hollywood Reporter exclusively.
The documentary film centers around the late  legendary jazz trumpeter  and St Louis native Clark Terry and his mentorship of young blind pianist Justin KauflinAlan Hicks directed the film, winning Best New Documentary Director at Tribeca Film Festival. Chicago native music producer Quincy Jones and Paula DuPre Pesmen (The Cove) produced it.
Clark died Feb 21 of this year at the age of 94.
The movie received a lot of buzz and critical acclaim. THR reviewer David Rooney said of the documentary:
"Bridging the 66-year age difference between them with their love of music, the two men boost each other's spirits through seemingly insurmountable struggles, in ways that are truly moving to witness. Hicks and his co-writer and editor Davis Coombe chronicle a four-year period in this remarkable bond, bringing warmth, generosity and immediacy to the film that reflect the personal qualities of its two principal subjects. And while there's never a preachy note, the sheer resilience and optimism of both CT and Justin in the face of every hard knock make for a powerful lesson."

Chicago playwright Tanya Saracho is moving to ShondaLand.  She announced on Instagram Wednesday that she will be a writer on ABC's "How to Get Away With Murder" for its upcoming season.
"It makes me super proud and happy to announce that I will be joining the #HOWTOGETAWAYWITHMURDER writers room!" she posted next to a logo from the show. "I am too too hyped!!!"
She will be a co-producer on the show.
Saracho spent the last two years burnishing her reputation as a writer and producer for the critically acclaimed HBO series "Looking." She also appeared on an episode of "Looking" this season playing the memorably charismatic Ceci, the straight-talking cousin to Raul Castillo's Richie.
Previously, Saracho logged time in the "Girls"writers room with Lena Dunham and wrote for "Devious Maids" for Lifetime.
A native of Los Mochis, Mexico, and a Boston University alum, Saracho came to Chicago to pursue playwriting full-time after college. She is a co-founder of Teatro Luna, which produced several of her plays. Her work has also been produced by other companies in town, including the Goodman Theatre.

As we celebrate 10 years of blogging on July 5 we will highlight some of the stories reported and covered over the years each week.

THIS WEEK 2006
One of the places I fell in love with (in Los Angeles) was a coffeeshop in Leimert Park in the Crenshaw District called Lucy Florence. It is owned by twin brothers Ron and Robert Harris (They are the twins who were featured teaching the models how to spin last week on Tyra Banks' America's Next Top Model). My buddy and temp roommate Keith Underwood took me to this shop on my first day in L.A. and since then, dubbed it my home away from home. (My first day there, I told them that they looked familiar then it dawned on me that they were not too long ago on Tom Joyner's Variety Show dancing a 1968 routine during the talent segment of the show! They told me that the show had auditions at their shop prior to their being on the show. ) The food is great (the caramel almond cake would make a diabetic go crazy!!!), they are hospitable to their customers and they treat everybody the same whether they are someone like Bernie Mac (who had a brithday party there while I was L.A.), a politician, or some bum on the street. During my first day there, I saw a staged reading of a stageplay presented by the Los Angeles African American Rep Company (http://www.laaarep.com/.) The featured stageplay, "Sweet Evalina" was written by LAAAREP member Kyona Levine.

THIS WEEK 2007
On Sunday, I peeped out the Glamour Ball and hair Show at the Adam’s Mark Hotel . I cant recall who put this show on (one of the sponsors though was Flawless magazine) , but I do know that the models came from Amore and hosted by (more like shouted by) Deandre Perryman. When I went to the front desk to ask about the fashion show, I was told it was on the 4th floor. So, I walked to the elevator to get to the 4th floor.

When I got to the floor, I saw the area empty. I didn’t know where the event was. Then I saw this sista who look’d as though she was part of some kind of event cause she had green furry eyelashes on. I asked her if she was part of the show and she said YES. I asked her where the event was. Her reply was, “I don’t know yet, we’re working that out. HUH?

Not a good sign.

THIS WEEK 2008
St. Lewis (bka B. Skye) of Falava of Love 3. 2 St. Louis named Lewis Lewis. MediaTakeout is buzzin after it reported on the now infamous incidnet that happenned (and that all the STL black newzies reported on) at the Loft duiring the Million Dollar Amn contest last month
Here is what the article stated:

April 12, 2008. Here's a report - sent in by one of MediaTakeOut.com's faithful readers:

I attended "Saint Louis" from flavor of love, Million Dollar Man party that occured at a popular night club in St. Louis. First off the b*tch gets on the microphone saying "Yah hoe's thought I couldn't do it but look at me now" vs saying, thank you for attending my event. She also had a special guest who was "Gravee" and she was looking a mess as well! But anyway the contest was suppose to be for her to find her "Million Dollar Man", in St. Louis. As soon as the contest got started the first contestant to hit the stage was weird looking guy. A gentleman on the stage asked the guy to step down from the stage which started the madness! As the other contestants were walking across the stage, the weird guy that was kicked off the stage was still upset and going off. So that's when "Saint Louis", got smacked at her own party by the guy and that's when the fight occurred. After the fight was over, the contest was shut down and everybody was told to leave. She is soooooooo ghetto and how do you get smacked at your own party? Further more you got kicked off the second show and ugly ass Flav didn't even remember your name.......................So Sad!

THIS WEEK 2009
The St. Lunatics are on the verge of a comeback these days. Not only is newly freed member City Spud is back in the lineup, but the St. Louis crew just recently, released its newest video, “St. Lunatics,” the first single off their upcoming CD, “City Free” (the followup to their 2001 debut “Free City”) The video was directed and shot by Traffic Music Award winner Dana Christian. On an intersteing note, Christian gave the scoop on the video which wasn’t supposed to be the actual video. He said, “It (the video) wasn’t supposed to be the music video of Lunatics. It was just a taping, a camera set up doing the song for like one take. Me and Kyjuan felt it should be more but after everyone saw it, they was like this is it.” To peep out the take, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fIXxpiv1RU

THIS WEEK 2010
Biographer Kitty Kellys unauthorized book on the Big O is the talk of the world ever since the book came out this week. It appears thatteh book is trying to dispel the image of Oprah as the Universal Galaxy Mother of TV America. According to Kelly she interviewed more than 800 people (including her step father Vernon Winfrey which we will talk about later in this blurb) and spent four years researching the book. It book talks about her spoiled and diva-ish behavior , how she speaks in first person, how she is asexual and her affair with John Tesh among many other “secrets.”

THIS WEEK 2011

Why did Rev Al Sharpton and Dr Cornell get into a verbal fight about President Obama? Why did that mother from NYC drive her and three of her children into the Hudson river and killing herself and three children? Why didnt Eva Longoria didnt think her boob wasnt going to come out of a tuxedo jacket without a bra? Why was folk so shocked when American Idol contestant Pia Tascano went home last week? And why does it matter of the eliminations when most of the finalists will receive record deals anyway? Why doesnt St. Louis have an NBA team? Why is so much time and money spent on the Barry Bonds trial? Why was Latoya Jackson wearing a Michael Jackson outfit circa 1987? Why are air traffic controllers falling alseep these days? And why did Nene Leakes say that Latoya was old, got famous from her last name and acts like was 12? And why has actress Loretta Devine become the go-to actress to play every mother in urban based films?

AT THE LIL WAYNE CONCERT At SCOTT TRADE: Why were there so many sistas wearing ho-fits? Why did Nicki Minaj do a lap dance on a sista and then stop realizing kids were in the crowd? And speaking of kids, why were their some toddlers at the concert? Why were polictcians State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, and State Representative Jamilah Nasheed have a verbal clash in a luxury box at the concert ? Why did Rick Ross call his fans "mutah fuckas?" And Why wasn't Drake on the bill?

THIS WEEK 2012

Jury selection wrapped up Tuesday for the trial of William Balfour, accused of murdering Oscar winner  and Chicagoan Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew.  The final four panelists were chosen on the second day of questioning of prospective jurors. Among them was a member of an acrobatics group and someone who served on the jury of another murder trial years ago.

THIS WEEK 2013
This past Monday was St Louis Cardinals first home game and Opening Day at Busch Stadium. The ceremonies prior to their game with Cincinnati was in dedication to the late Cards great Stan Musial who died in January.
From reports, pre-game ceremonies were mostly a tribute to The Man. Musial's four children unveiled a marker on the left field wall honoring their father — his No. 6 inside a red circle with his signature across it. Fans stood, many with hats over their hearts, during a video tribute.
Even the national anthem paid homage to Musial's passion, since it was performed by harmonica players with the Gateway Harmonica Club, of which Musial was an honorary member.
Activities also included two pep rallies outside the stadium. Inside, the Budweiser Clydesdales circled the warning track followed by the parade of Hall of Famers in red Mustangs and wearing red blazers — Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Red Schoendienst, Ozzie Smith, Bruce Sutter and Whitey Herzog.
Ceremonial first pitches were thrown by two members of the 2006 championship team, Jason Isringhausen and Jim Edmonds.
The announced attendance of 47,345 was also a new

regular season record for Busch Stadium III

THIS WEEK 2014
So fans of Scandal have only one question after looking at the season finale this Thursday--did Harrison die? The actor
who plays the character, Kansas City, Mo native Columbus Short, is also asking the same thing from reports even after his hosting a season finale party
in Hollywood at the club Couture where he also performed his newly released single, "Gave Ya."

During the red carpet, a reporter asked him about
his character and his returning next season he replied, when a reporter asked him
"Everything's great. I don't know what all the noise is about."

The finale was reportedly shot last month (according to Short on the Tom Joyner Morning Show Friday) during Short's reported spousal and public assaults  and a new contract for Short hasn't reportedly been confirmed.

In regards to his single, "Gave Ya," he addressed the song on the now infamous interview with Tom Joyner on his morning show Friday morning.
When host Tom Joyner asked Columbus about his new single, “Gave Ya,” which Columbus later described as a message for women who aren’t confident about themselves. The exchange between the two was pretty curt:
Tom: “Did you always plan to release a song? Was that in the plan?”
Columbus: “No, that wasn’t in the plan.”
Tom: “When were you originally going to release this song?”
Columbus: “When it was ready.”
Tom: “And when was that?”
Columbus: “Right now."
The only person who knows of Short;'s future on the show is its creator and writer Shonda Rims who has been reported as saying she writes her characters on their ending then backwards. Rimes has also been reported saying that Short was warned about his personal battles with his wife and alleged domestic violence charges and public assaults. And after hearing the Joyner interview, we think Short, who sounded intoxicated, is done.

Why are Dems so deaperately want Hilary Clinton to run in 2016? And why isnt Joe Biden running? Why didnt all the ATL teachers take the plea deal? Why didnt Harry Connick Jr wait until commerical to address contestant Quentin's emotional rant about his friends getting voted off the show? Why did it seem as though Teraji Henson was more of a supporting guest star than a host on Saturday Night Live?  Why does Mariah Carey photoshop her album covers?
