On Tuesday March 14, the Who's Who  and What's What in Black St Louis celebrated Pi Day with a celebration of what makes St Louis "So St Louis" as it culminated with a State of Emergency Concert  the fourth  installment spearheaded by promoter Loose Cannon that was held at the Chaifetz Arena. The concert featured rap artists  include Migos, Gucci Mane, Fabolous, and Jeezy.

Along with the concert, there was another celebration of 314 Day that has also received exposure --The Delux Magazine cover. It was a  celebration of Black St Louis People, Places and Things with a collage of St Louis personalities from entertainment, politics and movers and shakers in the community.

On the surface, the cover is definitely a creative and nifty approach (Loose Cannon's promoter Slim is part of the cover in backwards ballcap by the way) with the caricature heads as illustrated by St Louis based musician and photographer Joseph Richardson (who is also part of the face collage). But after reading some of the comments on the magazine's Facebook page, some praised the cover while others despised it.

Why?

Some felt some people shouldnt have been on the cover while some some felt some people were absent from it .  Also, one particular notable St Louisan,  requested not to be represented on the cover according to the commentary from its editor Keith Griffin III on Delux's  Facebook page. (You can read who that person was and other commentary   athttps://www.facebook.com/deluxmagazineatl)

Here's our thing. The effort to do the cover was commendable, but  anytime that you do anything with a subjective slant whether its The Best Of, or Best Dressed, or  Who's Who, there's always going to be some controversy as far as why certain people and items are listed. We would hope that Griffin and Delux expected this cover controversy as soon as the cover was posted on social media (actually there are two versions according to Delux Facebook page) but from the constant Facebook explanations on Delux's page, it appears as though it wasnt (But, then again, if they did expect it, then it worked!)

Being part of the media, we understand that it is fueled by numbers and sales in order to survive . And in this age of social media, outlets such as newspapers and magazines are a dying breed and must draw people to their product by any means to compete. From a business P.O.V., we assume Griffin made certain decisions  about the mag cover on who should be featured based on who would create a buzz   as well and getting the public's hands on it.

Hence, we received scoop from a source on what may have transpired on the cover's choices, but to be fair, we wont get into blind item territory.

Nevertheless, after the Facebook posting of the cover, Griffin had to go on the defense about his choices on the Delux Facebook page, yielding a  continuous back and forth between Griffin and supporters, haters  and opponents. In other words, a never ending lit wick to the firecracker.

To solve this, a well crafted PR based statement could have been posted---and then move on to other business.

All in all, we commend Griffin and Delux for the idea of commemorating 314 Day with the Who's Who on its cover, and it is definitely a collector's item, but the current beef that is brewing on Facebook because of it,  has definitely severed and disunified the whole idea of  314 Day.
