FEATURE BITZ

When it comes to art, people have their own interpretation and understanding of what its purpose is in the world. One artist in particular is painter/visual artist C’Babi Bayoc whose been on the grind for several years with his caricaturesque style visual images.
OUTSTAGN had a chance to talk with Bayoc about his style of painting and other tidbits.

OS: So, when did you become interested in painting and at what age?

CB: i took my first painting class in college at SWIC Southwestern Illinois College back when it was BAC Belleville Illinois College. I always had an interest in art, just didn't really trip off it until I was graduating from high school and needed to major in something at junior college.

OS:When you first began to paint what types of things did you paint?

CB:I merely copied images that I thought I should paint like women, guitar players.
no imagination. Typical stuff. I did an ink of Tyson getting knocked out in
high school. That kind of got a little fire going in me. I couldn't believe
that came out of me.

OS:Are you originally from St Louis and if so, what part and of , course,
the high school you graduated from?

CB: I am from O'fallon, Illinois. I didn't move to St. Louis until I returned from Grambling State University in 1996.

OS:You have been commissioned to paint for some noteworthy people such as Prince. How did that come about?

CB:He had a show in Edwardsville, Illinois  way back in the day. He donated food to The Dignity House on Union (in St Louis) that weekend and I was asked to hang work in the gallery because Prince might come through. Long story short, his staff videotaped the work and he saw the video and was interested in purchasing some work. It was crazy! He picked three pieces and I shipped those bad boys off. A year later he wanted to see some more pics and he bought five more one of which became the cover of (his CD)"Rainbow
Children."

OS:What other noteworthy figures have bought your art?

CB:Erykah Badu, Chris Lighty (RIP), actor James Lesure from the TV show “Las Vegas”, Ex-Rams player Demarco Farr. That's all i can recall.

OS:What has been the highest figure that you’ve made from one of you paintings?
 CB: Over $10,000 dollars.

OS: Do you have a signature piece?
CB: Well, the largest audience is for the Violator Project but I don't have a signature piece yet.

OS:In your opinion, what is the state of art today in regards to its role in
our society?
CB:Art is still important on every level. Artists are behind everything from animations to storyboards for real time movies from developing cars to building furniture. I just saw a story about a hospital with a contemporary art collection that is helping heal. I have people in tears nightly as my paintings evoke memories of sadness and happiness. Art is
always needed and an important part of life.

OS:What obstacles have you been through being a painter, yet alone a painter
of color?
CB:The main obstacle that is fresh in mind is the frustration of being requested by predominantly white institutions like colleges and county libraries asking  if I'll be available to show some work in a year or two when there is a free black history month on their calendar. That's when they have a "budget."  Also,  they don't even consider you the rest of the year though people show all year.

OS:What is it about you that people would be surprised to know about you?
CB: I'm deathly uncomfortable with small talk. I’m just fine staying home renting a
movie than meeting at a bar or watching a game with the boys. I never
mastered just hanging out.

OS:This year you started painting images regarding black manhood and
Fatherhood called “365 Days  with Dad” talk about that as far as your inspiration.
CB: I've always been interested in doing a series on black fatherhood but never to this crazy ass degree. It was something that was entrusted in me to do. I'm re-inspired every time I see or hear of the craziness happening to kids and young adults like the three kids in their early twenties that died recently on the Grand bridge after running from the cops, which was in reference to some folks shooting up a house. We have to inspire men to get there ass back in the home and kiss their sons and daughters and say "I love you!."

OS:Whats next for you?
CB: I want to go large with this same series (365 ) and work on
one a month like mural size pieces, some on canvas but many on abandoned
buildings in North St Louis.  I want to make Dad's image bold and present.

OS:How can people get in contact with you if they would like to purchase
any of your work or want a piece painted?
CB: They can shout at me on Facebook

BLIND DISH

In the early 2000s, we got scoop from a renowned Los Angeles photographer who was instructed by this R&B group's manager to focus on its lead singer only when taking the group's promo shots. The group has won several Grammy Awards, had several group changes and the lead singer is now a major superstar hos won many Grammy Awards as well. Who is the group and the lead singer?

This week we selected as the Fashionista, KMOV and STL TV personality  Sande Stevenson, who has her own Socialite Sande series on YOUTUBE, who wore an elegant necklace on one of her Facebook posts recently. For the Dapper Dan, we chose poet/rapper Ooops who sported an off white tux with gold vest, tie and gold pocket square with white trimming. Ooops wore this ensem when he got married last weekend to poet Kels DK at The Ambassador in St Louis.

Why are people breaking their necks to get the new IPhone5 and nothing changed from 4? Why were there so many mistakes with the replacement NFL referees and they are suppose to know the game? Why did a man use a loaded gun to try and  cure his friend's hiccups by pulling the trigger and accidentally killed him? Why did Presidential candidate Mitt Romney use spray tan when he spoke on the Telemundo Channel? Why did Kanye West use a look alike Kim Kardashian in his leaked sex tape? And why was the tape leaked in the first place? Why is New Jersey passing a Snooki Law when it come to filming shows in that city? Why is Lindsay Lohan gettin a chance after chance avoiding jail and still breaking laws? Why is the star of the show Animal Practice a monkey? And why did people make such a bis deal about the Tracy Morgan passed out  on the floor prank during the Emmys?
