President
Obama paid tribute to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Wednesday before
throngs of people who descended on the National Mall in Washington , D.C. , to commemorate the 50th anniversary
of his "I Have a Dream" speech, declaring that "his words belong
to the ages."
King's address, delivered to 250,000 supporters, punctuated the
1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It was a
watershed moment for race relations in America that has been remembered in a
week-long series of events, which culminated in remarks from President Obama on
the steps of the Lincoln Memorial Wednesday afternoon.
"His words belong to the ages, possessing a power and
prophecy unmatched in our time," Obama said of King. "We rightly and
best remember Dr. King's soaring oratory that day, how he gave mighty voice to
the quiet hopes of millions."
Pointing
to laws, social change, and himself as an example of how far the nation has
come since King's speech, Obama was quick to highlight economic disparities
between whites and blacks as proof that King's dream hasn't been fully
realized.
But he chided those who dismiss the gains that have been made by
the people who marched for civil rights in 1963.
"On the battlefield of justice, men and women without rank,
or wealth, or title, or fame would liberate us all, in ways that our children
now take for granted," Obama said. "To dismiss the magnitude of this
progress, to suggest as some sometimes do that little has changed, that
dishonors the courage and the sacrifice of those who paid the price to march in
those years."
Celebrities
such as Oprah Winfrey and Jamie Foxx were among a list of speakers who
addressed a nation that has made great strides in racial equality since King's
"dream" speech helped bring about landmark civil rights legislation.
"Dr. King was the passionate voice that awakened the
conscience of the nation," Winfrey told the people in the crowd, urging
them to carry on his message. "He challenged us to see how we all are more
alike than we are different."
According to BCT Consulting, the organizers of event,
there were "give or take 100,000 folks in today's attendance."

Rap superstar Kanye West flipped the script on a TV audience of millions when he
played "Blood on the Leaves" instead of "Black Skinhead" at
the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on August 25.
The song samples Nina Simone's cover of Billie Holiday's
"Strange Fruit." That song, released in 1939, was based on a poem by Abel Meeropol about the lynching of African
Americans in the days of Southern slavery. The sobering lyrics include the
lines, "Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze/ Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees."
West started the
performance in near-darkness lit only by a small spotlight. When the skittering
beats kicked in, strong backlighting silhouetted West dancing wildly in front
of a backdrop of a huge tree. It was the first time West performed the Yeezus track in public; and, as with
much of West's work, there was more to the art than immediately greeted the
audience.
The tree was a
photograph called "Lynching Tree" by British artist and filmmaker
Steve McQueen. The image is of an actual tree near New Orleans , from which slaves
were once hung, and many lynched victims are buried around it. The photograph
is currently on display at the Schaulager Museum in Basel , Switzerland .
McQueen shot the powerful image while making his movie Twelve Years a Slave, the story of Solomon Northup,
a free African-American man from upstate new York who was kidnapped
in 1841 and sold into slavery at a Louisiana cotton plantation.
The film, which comes out October 18, features Chiwetel Ejiofor as Northup; as well as Brad Pitt and
Paul Giamatti.
West posted "Lynching Tree" on his website and Twitter account along with the text:
"This tree was used for lynching. Those who were murdered are buried in
the ground around the tree. Blood on the leaves."
Also on the same MTV Awards show, singer/actress Jennifer Hudson was the the other surprise performer as she sang the closing minutes of Macklemore and Lewis and Mary Lambert's trophy winning sing, "Same Love" To
close, J-Hud and Lambert faced each other and had a
good old-fashioned sing-off before sharing a hug.
It was just one of many VMA moments for Lambert.
"That was so cool," the singer told us. "In rehearsals, I was
like, 'How can I not talk about this [cameo]? I have to keep
my mouth shut.' It was really hard," Lambert admitted. "
[Hudson 's] a phenomenal singer and a phenomenal person,
performer — all of it."
In unrelated J Hud newz, the film adaptation of Anné Mariè du Preez Bezdrob’s biography Winnie Mandela: A Life, that she stars in exploring the personal and political life of the wife of renowned activist and revered former South African President, Nelson Mandela (played by actor Terrence Howard), will also have a music soundtrack produced by RCA Records next Tuesday, September 3, four days before the film, titled Winnie Mandela, opens in theaters on September 6. Hud will have a song on it called, th Bleed For Love, written by veteran, multiple award-winning songwriter, Diane Warren. She performs the song with the Soweto Gospel Choir.
And in more J Hud newz, she was scrapped from being a judge on the upcoming Americna Idol 13th season with the planned alum season along with Kelly Clarkson and Adam Lambert (now its Season 11 judge Jennifer Lopez, Season 12 judge Keith Urban and longstanding mentor Harry Connick Jr.)
When the producers
were hot on the idea of an all-alum panel, Hudson came on, struck a deal and then waited as the series weighed
its options. While it chased its inaugural winner Clarkson -- who was firm in
her desire not to join the panel -- Lambert also made it clear that he was
game. And, yet,
producers decided that an all-alum panel wouldn't work without Clarkson and
ditched the idea all together. Even as Hudson waited in the wings.
Actress and game show hist Jane Lynch's
estranged wife, Dr. Lara Embry, is requesting that the actress to pay her
attorney's fees and spousal support, according to People magazine.
Lynch filed
for divorce from Embry in July 2013, just a month after announcing the end of their
relationship. In the filing, Lynch requested that
the court refrain from awarding Embry spousal support.
Lynch and Embry married in June 2010 at a small ceremony in Massachusetts . And although the
union didn't work out, Lynch
told Larry King that
the two will remain friends.
"It's
two people who decided it's better to go apart than stay together," she
told King.
Lynch and Embry's divorce
announcement shocked fans, many of whom
took to Twitter to express their disappointment about
the split. But theirs isn't the only surprising divorce; click through the
slideshow below for other shocking celebrity splits.
In unrelated Lynch newz, she can be seen in Jill Soloway's new
dramedy, Afternoon Delight where Lynch
has a scene-stealing supporting role as the self-involved therapist to a stay-at-home mom who attempts to revive her sexually
depleted marriage by taking in a young stripper. The film opens this weekend.
