Legendary comedian and filmmaker Mel Brooks, who
Obama has said he admires for his over-the-top Western
satire "Blazing Saddles," dropped to one knee as if receiving
a knighthood after he was given his official citation for "a
lifetime of making the world laugh."
Obama warned Brooks that he would catch him if he tried to
sell his National Medal of Arts on eBay.
He also joked with Broadway star Audra McDonald, whose
citation was misplaced, and admired the spiked sneakers of
poet Louise Glück.
"I do think Mel Brooks kind of set the tone for this thing,"
Obama said afterward. "Historically, this has been a much more staid affair."
Also among the honorees: Motown producer Berry Gordy
and composer Philip Glass as well as authors Sandra
Cisneros, Ron Chernow, Rudolfo Anaya and James
McBride.
"We believe that the arts and the humanities are in many
ways reflective of our national soul. They're central to who
we are as Americans: dreamers and storytellers and
innovators and visionaries," Obama said.
Morgan Freeman was honored, but the actor was a no-
show. Obama deadpanned that Freeman, who has been
involved with the foundation raising money for his
presidential library in Chicago, "undoubtedly is off playing a
black president again."
landed the San Francisco 49ers quarterback on the cover
of Time magazine even as an opinion poll found him to be
the “most disliked” player in the NFL.
This week’s magazine explores how protest is “fueling a debate about privilege, pride and patriotism.”
The quarterback said he is refusing to stand for the national anthem to protest racial injustice and recent police killings, which has led to passionate responses from all sides. Other NFL players and athletes at all levels, including high school, are following Kaepernick’s lead by kneeling during the anthem. This issue will definitely be a collector's item for the
history of protest in this country. As they say, all it takes
is one step, or in this case one kneel to create a
stampede to get a movement started and we think the
New Ali will easily become the symbol of the Black Lives
Matter Movement.

HBO walked away with the most Emmy statuettes at the 68th Annual Emmy Awards, but the night still wasn’t quite as sweet for HBO as past years.
With 22 total Emmy wins, HBO was the biggest winner of the night. In 2015, HBO won a whopping 43 Emmys.
And this year, basic-cable network FX creeped in just behind HBO, with 18 wins.
Game of Thrones (PICTURED the cast and crew at the Emmy Awards), the Time Warner-owned pay-TV network’s massively popular hour-long drama, won 12 Emmys for the second year in a row. That total tied the show’s own record for the most wins in one night at the Emmys, which was set last year. HBO’s other big winner,
Veep, won three awards, while HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver also won an Emmy as the top variety talk series.
The 21st Century Fox-owned network set a record for basic cable with 18 wins last night. The true-crime series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story finished second only to Game of Thrones with nine Emmys, including the award for Outstanding Limited Series, while actors Courtney B. Vance, Sarah Paulson, and Sterling K. Brown (PICTURED)also took home statuettes for the series.
Comedian Louie Anderson also scored a sleeper win for his supporting role on comedy series Baskets and Archer won the animated series category, while the series Fargo and American Horror Story: Hotel each took home two Emmys apiece.
A record 21 people of color were nominated for awards last night, FX’s Brown and Vance, as well as the Egyptian-American Mr. Robot actor Rami Malek, among those winning their first Emmy. Indian-American comedian Aziz Ansari also shared a writing Emmy for the Netflix series Master of None with Asian-American co-writer Alan Yang, who spoke up about the need for more Asian-American characters and stories in Hollywood. Actress Regina King repeated her win for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series winning for "American Crime."
primetime block of ABC's telecast averaged an all-time low
11.3 million viewers and an 8.4 overnight rating among
households. That's down 5 percent from the low set in 2015.
Improvement was desperately needed. The TV Academy and
ABC were no doubt hoping there was nowhere to go but up
after the 2015 telecast bottomed out as the all-time lowest-
rated and least-watched. The 2015 show's initial 8.7
overnight rating ultimately translated to 11.9 million viewers
, below the previous all-time low set all the way back in
1990.

Wednesday’s biggest show, Empire, returned for
Rhonda Lyon (Kaitlyn Doubleday) who fell to her death as husband Andre (Trai Byers) looked
Season 3 premiere on FOX and the cliffhanger from Season 2 was revealed when Anika and Rhonda fought next to a ledge of the tall building and someone fell (or not ) and discovered that it was
on. She will continue on the show as a special guest star as
a ghost. As far as the ratings of Season 3 episode it raked in
a 4,2 rating which equated to about 10.8 million viewers according to Nielsen. The premiere
but was down significantly from last fall’s season-two debut (6.7, 16.2 million).
So were you all surprised that Rhonda was killed? What
did you all think of the season premiere? It was
definitely
intense so we will see if the series will sustain its Empire
audience.
The St Louis Cardinals are batting for a spot in the playoffs during a heated wild card race . From reports, as of Friday morning, the Mets (81-72) and Giants (81-72) were in control of the National League's two wild-card spots. Both reportedly won Thursday while the Cardinals (80-72) fell half a game behind on their off day. ST. LOUIS CARDINALS didnt play Thursday but they have 10 games left. Three with the Cubs (the first of three will start today at Wrigley Field), four with the Reds and three with the Pirates.
Critics are giving The Cards a 55 percent chance to make the wild card cutoff to play in the playoffs. .
Will the Cards make it to the playoffs? Some are saying this is the Cubs season so we will see. We think its over for the boys in red.
Meanwhile, in St Louis football newz, from reports,a federal judge has ruled that the NFL's Rams must grant season tickets to some people who bought personal seat licenses while the team was still in St. Louis, even though the team is now in Los Angeles. The Rams must also refund deposits for other people who bought PSLs in St. Louis.
Reportedly, about 46,000 people had PSLs, which give the holder the right to purchase season tickets, for the St. Louis Rams, some at a cost of up to $1,000.
So the question is will any St Louis fans who sued the Rams actually will travel to Los Angeles to attend a game? The way St Louis fans are hating on their move, we think folk may just receive a refund.
Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo (Carlos Walker)was killed in a car accident this week. He was 40 years old.

In the play, Miss Julie (McConnell) has returned to take over her family’s plantation. But her dangerous attraction to the top servant and former slave, John (Conners), creates a crisis with his wife, and cook of the house, Clarissa, (Like)that explodes through social class and racial lines.
Miss Julie, Clarissa and John plays thru Sept 25, at Washington University's Edison Theatre (6445 Forsyth Boulevard;www.theblackrep.org)
After seeing, “Miss Julie, Clarissa and John” it definitely resonated
in regards to how slavery and its post-slavery elements can still affect both
black and whites when they mix. Directed by Andrea Frye and adapted by Mark Clayton Southers, “Miss Julie” is set on
a Virginia plantation 23 years since the end of the Civil War where the owner’s
man servant, John (played by Eric J Conners) and cook Clarissa (played by
Alicia Like) ) still lives and are married and are bothered by the owners
daughter, Miss Julie (played by Laurie McConnell) when she becomes attracted to
John.
The play deals with how interracial attraction and sex affects all three characters on a physical level and genetics perfectly without coming off tawdry or for shock value. The actors fit well with their characters, especially Like who plays the tragic mulatto. The only drawback was there wasnt much pacing in the dialogue that was spoken between each actor but when there were quiet moments (especially theThe Moment” between John and Miss Clarissa and Clarissa admiring Miss Julie’s hair while brushing it. ) is when the play's shining moments are highlighted..
The ending also is a bit melodramatic regarding how Miss Julie’s life ends, but overall, “Miss Julie” definitely will keep your attention.
