THE TOP ILLI MO STORY THIS WEEK IS
Chicago native hip hop artist-turned-actor Common can now add Oscar nominee to
his hyphenate for the song Glory that he co-wrote with
musician John Legend for the film Selma—one of the two nominations the film received Thursday. He wrote
the song after co-starring in the movie as civil rights activist James Bevel.
The film’s director Ava DuVernay had brought up penning a song for the film but
nothing was ever finalized as DuVernay was rushing to finish her movie.
“I just took the initiative to start working on it,” he said
Thursday morning after learning he landed an honor. “And I thought if I got
John Legend to do a song with me, I know it could be something really beautiful
for the movie.”
The musician is thrilled that Selma landed a Best Picture
nod but disappointed that actor David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay
were left off the list. “I have no understanding why they may not have gotten
the nominations for Best Director and Best Actor,” he said. “I think the work
Ava and David did is impeccable. And more than anything I want to celebrate
that.”
Common hasn’t heard yet whether the producers of the Oscar
telecast will invite him and Legend perform the song on Oscar night. But
if they ask, he’s game. “That would be incredible,” he said. “That would be the
high point of my career—a very high point.”
Prior to his Oscar nod, Common picked up two awards for the song. On the same day on Thursday (Jan. 15) -- on what would have been Martin Luther
King Jr.'s 86th birthday -- Common accepted best song at the Critics'
Choice Movie Awards for "Glory," his and John Legend's
sweeping track from the MLK biopic Selma.
"Today is Dr. King's birthday, so I want to receive this
award in his honor," the rapper said when he hit the stage.
Common also managed to shout
out two of the Selma players – DuVernay and leading man
David Oyelowo – for their Oscar snubs earlier in the day, though Common and
Legend were included in the final nominations. "Thank you Ava DuVernay,
for making the first feature about Dr. King so beautifully," he said,
later adding, "David Oyelowo, you are incredible. You sparked it."
Then on Sunday, he and Legend was on stage at the Golden Globes to pick up an award for the song.
Then on Sunday, he and Legend was on stage at the Golden Globes to pick up an award for the song.
"I want to thank God and the Hollywood Foreign Press,"
began Common.
"I am the hopeful black woman who was denied the right to
vote. I am the caring white supporter," added Common. "I am the
unarmed black kid, who maybe needed a hand, but instead of, was given a
bullet."
"Selma has
awakened my humanity," he continued, thanking Ava DuVernay, Oprah Winfrey and more.
"I'm so honored to be a part of this amazing film," said
Legend.
"We're so grateful to write this song."
If the record now shows, Common and John Legend will win the Oscar for "Glory" the only hope for a win for the film, "Selma." Well deserved for sure.
Grammy and Emmy Award winning and Oak Park, Ill native comedian Kathy Griffin made her debut with the other hosts of Fashion Police on E! Sunday but didnt have good reveiws from it. ’
According to a source close to Griffin told RadarOnline.com that the comedienne is “slightly upset over the backlash she is getting.”
According to a source close to Griffin told RadarOnline.com that the comedienne is “slightly upset over the backlash she is getting.”
“Everyone is giving Kathy a hard time because they are saying that she messed up,” the friend divulged.
Griffin, who replaced the late Joan Rivers at the helm of the show, “gave a shout out to Joan and used the word ‘heaven,’ which is kind of taboo to say on air because of the diversity of the viewership worldwide,” the source explained.“Fans and higher-ups are upset.”
Griffin, also caused controversy when she said George Clooney's wife, Amal, who was wearing a Dior gown with white gloves, as the worst dressed celebrity
at the Golden Globes. According
to the source, “People are really coming down on her for that!”
“Yeah,
she’s annoying,” Griffin said of Amal. “You
heard me! Everybody run in fear! I thought it was weird she had those gloves
that remind me of, like, a porn scene, where the guy goes home and there’s the
naughty dishwasher and she only has the gloves,” Griffin added.
However, Kelly Osbourne,
Griffin’s co-host was quick to agree and said that Clooney’s gloves
belonged “on a vet helping a calf be born.”
“Kathy
is also getting heat because Amal Clooney apparently has a huge fan base,” the
insider told Radar.
“No
one is talking about canning Kathy over this,” the source insisted. “Her
higher-ups and fans are just coming down on her and she thinks that she doesn’t
deserve it.”
Well, what did the higher ups expect? Kathy puts the C in controversy. She always says something or does something that makes headlines. Isnt that why they hired her? Isnt that how Joan Rivers was?

Kansas City, Mo. native screenwriter Gillian Flynn, author of the best-selling novel Gone
Girl and screenwriter of
David Fincher’s film adaptation, won a Critice Choice Award Sunday for Best Screenplay Adaptation for Gone Girl. Soon after her win she was asked if she thinks there could be another
movie about her damaged lead characters, Nick and Amy Dunne.
She told the New York Daily News, “It could be really fun a few years from now to pick it up and see what those crazy Dunnes are up to a few years down the road and if they got on—not well, I don’t think.”
She told the New York Daily News, “It could be really fun a few years from now to pick it up and see what those crazy Dunnes are up to a few years down the road and if they got on—not well, I don’t think.”
Flynn wants to keep the original film’s chilly
tone intact, saying she won’t write it unless Fincher once again is attached to
direct. “I would have to have the exact same people to do it—I would want
Rosamund [Pike], Ben [Affleck], and Fincher to do it,” she says.
Flynn, who is now working
with Fincher on the HBO series Utopia, didn’t provide any specifics about
when she might start writing Goner Girl or
whatever it’s called. But we suspect that “a few years from now” the notion of
marriage being a hopeless trap will still be relevant.
Along with the good comes the bad. And the bad has fallen on Illinoisan actress Melissa MCCarthy who received a Razzie Award for Worst Actress for her directorial debut in last summer's "Tammy."
The ceremony will hand out the awards the day before the Oscars on Feb 21.
American Idol aired Part Two of its auditions in Kansas City, Mo Monday. Some of the highlights include Judges Harry Connick Jr and Keith Urban sending
banjo-slinging, yodeling country girl Ellen Peterson(PICTURED) to Hollywood with a
jam of The Beverly Hillbillies theme, and Big Ron, who
deemed himself "Big Sexy" and serenaded Jennifer Lopez withMarvin Gaye and got a ticket There also were plenty of guitarists, and the return of
hopeful Casey Thrasher,
who was passed over for Ben Brileylast
season.
Mizzou Tigers alum Michael Sam, is reportedly getting married to his college sweetheart Vito Cammisano, according
to TMZ The pair became media fodder last year when
they shared a hug and kiss (pictured) following the exciting news that Sam had
been drafted by the Rams last summer.
First-year candidates and former St Louis Rams players , Kurt Warner and Orlando
Pace are among 18 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The list of nominees was reportedly reduced Thursday to 15 from the
modern era, one senior and two contributors. A finalist must receive at least
80 percent of the votes from the 46-person selection committee to be elected. Another one of the other 15 modern-day finalists was former St Louis Rams running back Jerome Bettis and former Kansas City Chiefs player Will Shields. The committee writers will meet on Jan. 31 in Phoenix, Ariz., and consider the candidacy of each finalist. The Hall of Fame selection process stipulates that the number of modern-day inductees is capped at five. This means a maximum of seven players can be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The number usually falls between four and seven.
The 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame class will be announced in a television special that's set to air on Jan. 31 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
St. Louis Blues forward
T.J. Oshie created his own cereal called Oshie O’s recently. Since the cereal's debut, Oshie has scored eight goals and registered six assists
for 14 points in 12 games. As a result of his success, Oshie was named the NHL’s first star of the week after registering five goals in his past three games.
Oshie developed a national following
because of his shootout heroics for Team USA at the 2014 Olympics, and that has
helped his cereal sales. The cereal was originally designed as a collectible
but it has grown beyond website sales.
“Since Dec. 5, Oshie cereal is selling better than hot cakes,” said Public Label Brands CEO Ty Ballou, who developed the cereal for Oshie. “Two orders have been sent for T.J. fans in Alaska and Doug’s Supermarket in his hometown of Warroad, MN, is now stocking the cereal for the local faithful. Dierbergs grocery stores in St. Louis have built displays for the cereal.”

Rap legend Krayzie Bone and St Louis native director CraigThomas have collaborated as prodcuers on the new TV series, Backstage that loosely tells the story of what went on before, during, and after the Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s record deal. The show explores the lives of four young men as they travel from St. Louis, Missouri, to the steps of Hollywood’s doors. The series stars St Louis native rap artists Jibbs, Rockwell Knuckles, Peetey Weestro and singer Aloha Misho to name a few,
For Krayzie Bone this project is more than just telling the story of things that can go wrong during the deal, it’s more about putting out a message people can relate to.
" We were all in harmony, but personally we were all different individuals, " Krayzie said. "that was the point I wanted to bring out, letting everyone know that you can be a totally different person but as a group you can gel together if there’s a chemistry there. ”
: There’s nothing on television that’s going to be able to address what happens behind closed doors. You have a couple of shows that may be able to take a crack at it but don’t have a legendary artist like Krayzie Bone telling his story.” Thomas said. "With (the show) Empire they have to lean on the quality of their characters. Everything they have is fictitious. With the Bone situation these are actual things that happened, it’s going to be real so the wow factor is really going to be there.”
Backstage is currently being pitched around to Showtime, HBO, Stars, and Netflix. Heavy hitters like Nick Cannon have shown some interest in getting involved with the project as well. This series is being created as the prelude to the Bone Thugs-N-Harmony biopic that’s set to go into production in 2016.
