ADD: We were remiss to mention that veteran Chicago Cubs baseball player  Ernie Banks died Jan 23 at the age of 83. Nicknamed "Mr Cub," Banks was a Major League Baseball (MLB) shortstop and first baseman for 19 seasons, 1953 through 1971. He spent his entire MLB career with the Chicago Cubs. He was a National League (NL)All-Star for 11 seasons, playing in 14 All Star Games
Banks is regarded by some as one of the greatest players of all time.[2][3][4]
(And for a  Black History Month tidbit, entered Negro league baseball in 1950, playing for the Kansas City Monarchs.)
This Saturday,  Hundreds of fans reportedly gathered outside of Wrigley Field to pay their final respects to Chicago Cubs legend Ernie Banks.
Also, a  memorial service was held for Banks’ at Fourth Presbyterian Church In Chicago.

THE TOP ILLI MO STORY THIS WEEK IS

Kanye West showing his sensitive side in a video of him singing "Only One,"  to his daughter, North.
In the Spike Jonze-directed clip that premiered on Ellen Thursday, Kanye and his daughter, appear in footage shot more like candid home video than his usual big-budget productions.
On the clip, its rainy and the two walk outdoors. As Kanye sings lyrics written in the voice of his late mother speaking to him from heaven, he is reportedly seen holding hands with North as they walk through a field.
In one of the more precious scenes, North becomes fascinated by her father’s boots, and points to them. Kanye looksdown in awe. In another shot, he sings the lyrics to her while holding her in his arms as she peacefully gazes off camera.
On the Ellen show, Kanye says marriage to Kim Kardashian and fatherhood have calmed him. “I’ve learned how to shut up more,” he told Ellen DeGeneres. “I think I’m a better human being because of [Kim] and my daughter.”
Kanye compared some of his famous rants to his daughter. “I think I was going through my version of my terrible twos,” he said. “My daughter she wants to express herself but she doesn’t have the words. For me, there’s so many things I want to do with film or with clothing, and I didn’t have the words or the resources or the backing.”
Kanye also revealed that he and Kim would like to have more children. “Yeah, we’re trying,” he told the talk show host, adding that he would have as many kids as his wife wants.

Well, good for Ye.   We think he has finally grown up.

Chitown native Patricia Arquette has been nominated six times over her illustrious career, but Sunday she won her very first Screen Actors Guild Award. She took the stage to accept her Actor statue for Female Actor in a Supporting Role in "Boyhood" and was noticeably shaken upon hearing her name being called.
"I can't tell you what this means to me," she told the audience while taking out a folded-up piece of paper. I'm a fourth generation actor. My family has been committed to acting for over a century through feast or famine. My father Lewis Arquette taught me to approach work with compassion and gratitude and taught me also how hard it is to make a living as an actor."

She continued to thank her co-stars for their work on the film, which famously took 12 years to complete.

Her win and her win of the Golden Globe earlier this year has given her a leg up on winning the Oscar for her role when the Academy Awards will be presented Feb 22.

An The attorney for Apple Inc. defended the company’s use of Eminem’s songs on iTunes in court on Thursday, as a trial got under way to determine who had the right to offer digital downloads of the rapper’s music.

Eight Mile Style LLC, Eminem’s music publisher, and an affiliated company, Martin Affiliated LLC, say their contract with Aftermath Records, which controls the recordings, reportedly did not entitle it to strike a deal with Apple to sell 93 songs over iTunes.Eminem-2014

The case involves millions of dollars and the creative rights behind the hip-hop star. But the issue for the judge here in the rapper’s hometown is narrow: What do contracts between Eight Mile and Aftermath say about the ability to peddle songs beyond traditional compact discs?

So the question is did Apple go beyond its rights to carry the rapper's songs and get most of the profits. The contract in question questions if digital downloads should be profited because it only states CDs can be downloaded. We think so as long as the record companies are paid. But we think its more of how much of that pie Itunes is receiving. . However, we think this case will hold a standard of how digital downloads can carry songs from recording artists.

In other Em newz, Back in November, the St Jospeh, Mo
native put out Shady XV, an album that ostensibly paired
some new songs with the greatest hits of his label, Shady
Records. One of the cuts on it thats making waves is
“Detroit vs. Everybody,” an anthem featuring an array of
Detroit based rappers, including  Big Sean, Danny Brown,
Royce Da 5’9”, Trick Trick, and “Try Me” sensation Dej Loaf
all join Eminem on the track, celebrating their city

The now infamous St Louis based Megan Meier Internet bullying trial was featured in an episode of The Investigation Discovery series "Web of Lies" that was aired this week.
The case involved teen Meier who believed she had met a boy and fallen in love online on MySpace in 2006  and a taunted by this boy who turned out to be Lori Drew, the  mother of the friend of Drew who created the fake profile page to fish info about Meier as revenge for Megan allegedly spreading vicious rumors about  her daughter. The world is mourning the passing of Coretta Scott King this week. She died of a respiratory failure. The 78-year-old matriarch died Tuesday at an alternative medicine clinic in Mexico. She was in dire health. She a few months ago. She also was dealing with ovarian cancer. I had a chance to see her speak when I attended the National Black Arts festival in the ATL in 2002 when I traveled with the Eugene B. Redmond Writers' Club to perform. She was the first speaker at the Opening Ceremonies at the Studioplex right next to the MLK Center. She was telling people to quiet down because the program was about to start before she brought on the mayor fo the city. I was so entraced by her becasue she was so regal and elegant--and is a part of American/African/World History!.

WORDZ

TO

Why is the Saudis giving FLOTUS Michelle Obama a hard time for not covering her head in their country? Why are some folks giving music group TLC the side eye for doing a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to record their last album? Why did actor Benedict Cumberbatch refer black actors and actresses as "colored"?
Why did it take this long for Tom Petty to question the similarity in the chorus of Sam Smith's "Stay With Me?"  Why didnt Chris Brown complete all of his community Service? Why is the media giving Marshawn Lynch a hard time for not wanting to speak to them? Why did Claudia Jordan leave her laptop in the back of her car for it to be stolen? Why did Willow Smith pose bare chested for a magazine? Why is Taylor Swift the only artists these days to be able to sell millions of albums? And why does the ink from an ink pen vanish when you write with it on a wall surface?
